Mimicking Overhead Mics

I'm sure most of you know this, but it's something I stumbled upon recently and thought it was a great idea for faking OH mics on a synthesized drum kit.

Direct an FX send from the Cymbals, Hihat, and maybe snare (at relative volumes) to a buss.
Put a delay on it, of 15-40ms (to mimick the size of your room), set the delay to 100% wet, add a little reverb, and mix the volume until it subtly shimmers around your fake kit.

I've found that it can really help to make the sampled kits or synths sound fuller, or more real.

Just an idea.

Not a bad idea... If only because you add the other elements in at different levels and add the reverb to make it sound like room mics or OH's.
Kinda simple, but heck if I would have thought to do this.

    =)

You could also probably send out the buss to a speaker or monitor and mic it in a nice sounding room.

Something else I've done is to put a mic in the control room and rerecord the drum track off a full range set of monitors. JBL 4312s in my case. Blend this in as a room mic track. If you want realism then grunt and fart during fills as the track is playing and they'll think it was a real drummer.

    Hahaha, great ideas.
How about recording a mumbled "you know, we could just replace him with a machine" somewhere in the background?

Sounds like a good technique! There are also impulse reverbs that do this effect very nicely.

I use SIR Reverb (It's excellent and Free!) and use a "drum overhead" impulse.
