Microphone in stereo?

Can some one help me? When I record with a Mic, the signal goes through either left or right channel, and will only playback the same, unless I playback in mono. I'm sure I have all the mono/stereo swiches to stereo on, but I can only hear the track on one side. I also have my interface (Tascam US 122) switched to stereo when recording . Is it possible to record a mic in one channel and then convert it to stereo for mixing and playback? Thanks for some help.

Mics are not stereo, they are mono (most anyway, I seriously doubt you have a stereo mic). you should have your tascam set to mono, not stereo - that's your problem. you're trying to record in stereo in your sound card with a mono device, so the right channel is blank because there's no source.

once you record in mono, MC (assuming you're using MC) will put the mono microphone into the stereo field for you and you will hear playback in both speakers.

Just to add to this a tad, don't worry to much about recording in stereo. Stereo is a end result product. In the old days of analog tape recording all signals were mono going in and then the tracks were individually panned to separate positions in the stereo field to give them room to breath and to cause a wider sound effect. recording the separate tracks in stereo is not necessary, even though some instruments sound a tiny bit fuller that way in most situations it really does not matter at all.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!
