Full System Recovery

Just using this thread to vent some hostility! I'm using an old computer to write this.

Windows XP OS crashed on my DAW computer. After trying all other possible options the only option left is to do a full system recovery which will erase everything from my hard drive that has been added since it came new from the factory.

This means that I have to re-install and configure all my digital audio/midi programs, soundcard, PODxt amp, Variax guitar, digital camera, joysticks, printers, scanner, etc...

I'll also loose a lot of data but fortunately I had previously backed up the most important stuff like my music projects and audio files that went with them. But there's still a lot of stuff I didn't back up like vacation photos, downloaded music files, etc. I'll also have to go back and re-download all the free plug-ins and soundfonts that I'd collected since I started digital audio recording. Will probably take over a week to complete.

I remember how troublesome it was to get my Cakewalk programs configured properly and now I'll have to do that all over again. So I'll probably be asking a lot of questions soon.

Let it be a lesson folks. Back up everything and back it up often!

Oh, man, Petey! That's a bummer! I assume you've tried starting up in safe mode and using a restore point?

and if you're on another computer, you realize that you could take the hard drive out of the DAW and plug it into the old computer and transfer those vacation photos and downloaded music files, etc over to the other system before you do a complete restore, right?

Oh Peter, I wish there was something we could do! This must be an absolute nighmare! I definitely will be much more diligent with backing up files (I just heard yesterday that my mom's computer crashed as well ... and lost a few things). I truly hope some of Reece's advice will help, at least a little bit.
    Sorry, man
    Heinz.

I belive that many times, this is the results of too much multitasking with our systems. I ask mine to do far to much these days, and hopefully will build a new DAW this winter to take that burden off of the old system, which surfs the net, downloads pics and audio, and midi files, serves a a family budget base, and a fancy typewritter. All that seems normal until you throw recording in the mix!

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for the concerns.

I did try to start in safe mode but it won't even start in safe mode. Can't get it to do anything at all. Seems some files had been deleted (probably moved to a different folder because I did a defrag yesterday) and the computer doesn't know where to look for them. The HP tech explained that this is a very unusual occurrence after trying every possible option. The only option left was to do a full system recovery.

I was thinking about Beag's suggestion of taking the hard drive out and installing into my other computer and then copying the files over. But while the tech was still on the line I already started the system restore. However while trying to do the system recovery the computer freezes on "Preparing recovery partition - please wait" and it's been there for about 3 hours. So I'm sitting here now typing this forum reply while I'm on hold with HP tech support. Apparently there's something wrong with my CD disks that contain the recovery files or there's something wrong with the hard drive itself and may have to be replaced. Either way it doesn't look good but if the recovery disk hasn't changed anything yet there might be a possiblity that those photo a music files are still on the hard drive and maybe I can still transfer them to another hard drive in the computer I'm using now.

I sure would like to be able to keep those downloaded itunes and vacation photos and word documents that weren't backed up. And also my priceless porn collection! (Just kidding) It's going to take a lot of humor to get through this.

Bummer. Been there, done that. Didn't like it.
For what it's worth, there's a fair chance that your hard drive has thrown a rod. I would be inclined to get a new hard drive, and start fresh. Pull your existing drive from the machine for the time being.
Once you have a clean install on the new drive, you can plug the old drive in as a slave, and you should be able to recover most of your files. The HP coaster set (aka Recovery disks) was the biggest motivator for my getting a regular WinXPCD.
    Best of luck to you.
