Sonar - how soon until it is VST3 compliant ?

A key VST 3 feature is as follows:-

" ..... VST3 helps to improve overall performance by applying processing to plug-ins only when audio signals are present on their respective inputs. So instead of always processing input signals, even when there is only silence present, VST3 plug-ins can apply their processing economically and only when it is needed .... " - www.steinberg.net

I know that I, and many others have been pushing for this feature in Sonar for a long time.

Given VST3 compliance allows for it *now*, how soon will it be before Sonar is VST3 compliant ?

6.1 ?
6.2 ?
6.3 ?
7.0 ?

Or do we have to wait until late > 2007 given that the SDK (software development kit) is not " ..... scheduled for release until the second quarter of 2007 ..... " - www.steinberg.net

Or

Why cant Cakewalk implement this feature for all DXi effects now ? and VST effects later ?

Properly written DX effects work like that already (have done for ages - may not be in the original DX spec, but it has been there for some time). Progress, progress...

I dont mean to disagree, but I am not aware of *any currently avaialble* DX effect or DXi instrumnent that operates like the new VST3 effects do in terms of applying processing to plug-ins only when audio signals are present on their respective inputs.

A more important question, just where are you going to get any VST3 plugins this year?

    Hi xackley

Thats kind of my point - the only ones currently available are the VST3 efx that come with Cubase 4.

I hoping that Sonar users wont have to wait nearly another whole year to enjoy the benefits of this [ or equivilent DX ] audio engine efficiency.

What's the bother? A new protocol allways need to be ironed out in one way or another. I'm not trying to dismiss you or your opinion but in my opinion the technological rat race is hairy enough w/out a new vsti protocol.

    have a good one

I can certainly appreciate the advance in technology as much as the next guy, but with processors in modern standard machines being so ridiculously powerful(dual core)... I just don't see the urgency to jump on this spec ASAP. It's not really a crucial bottleneck IMHO.

Why rush for a technology and the have to waite for companys to begin producing the products.

VST3 plugs are far and few between and the senquencers don't uses them yet except for one. Either use that sequencer aand enjoy those plugs or wait until it becomes popular for all.

    Peace

Well, ours do, in their DirectX or VST version .

Anyway, since the VST3 spec is not public yet, you should be very careful about what it's supposed to do and what it will actually do. In the end it will be up to the plug-ins developers to implement the new functionalities.

Oh man. I'm guilty of this too, but take my advice. Spend more time making music and less time looking for something that will "improve your workflow, lower cpu resources, make your sound more 'professional', iron your floor, sweep your clothes" or any other madness. Just spend more time finding new ways to use the gear and software you have and less time worrying about so-called "advancements".

Trust me, VST3 will be nothing to sneeze at for quite a while yet. It may eventually be something great, but there is no use for it at the moment.

Think about all these morons buying Playstation3's on Ebay for $900 right now. THERE AREN'T EVEN ANY GOOD GAMES YET!!!
