New CH Mix, Re Track

I have learned a bit more about recording and mixing and have re tracked the drums and re mixed this song.

If the drums sound big and boomy it's because they are . It has been a challenge trying to record them but I'm determined to use them. This drum kit is a Ludwig Vistalite, 24"/14" kick, 14", 16", 18" toms. 15" Paiste Sound Edge Hats. 17" and 18" Paiste Crashes. If the kit doesn't sound like what your use to hearing, well it's not.

Please take a listen. Your opinions are valued and very welcome...Thanks

    Hey Drumz,

You're gaining ground on this one now...the overall mix is MUCH better now.

The vocals still stomp the guitars a bit, but not as bad, and the drums are a bit weak in the mix, but still, this version is a big improvement.

    Hey Drumz,
Cool groove, i love the drumming and i'm a big fan of long journeys round the kit so i buzzed off those fills.
Excellent break in the middle and i loved the reversed sounds.
Some may say the vocals are lacking in definition but i think they suit the piece perfectly.
On a looping groove like this a tearing guitar solo would really be the icing, straight in after the mid break.

Hi Drumz, drums are sounding good.Cymbals quality is very good.If mixing can be done in another way the crisp sound of the drums can be felt more.(Vocals & guitars a bit less).

Hey guy's, thank you for taking the time to listen and for your excellent feedback, it is very helpful.

I should be able to fix what you recommended without much problem. I find it difficult to step outside this mix and get the right balance, so your input is valuable in this process.

Thanks for the positive input. I listened to your music and I must say that it's really good stuff, so I consider what you wrote about my song very encouraging. I do know a couple of good guitarist's that may want to add some lead to this song, or maybe someone on this forum would want to give it a go.

Thank's for your comments. You have an uncommon feel for music so I hold your opinion in high regard. Thanks for your advice, I will apply it to this song.

    Hey Drums,

Just listened to the newest mix.
You did bring the drums up some, but I'm still finding the guitars struggling for their space. I'd like to hear the verse rhythm without that nasty flange. It's sucking all the definition out of it...there's no clarity.
And still, the vocals are in need of major EQ. Completely kill all frequencies below 200hz...and boost in the 1k to 4k range to bring out some clarity.

This mix has improved since the original, but I don't think you realized just how much EQ was needed. Certainly not tiny amounts. Drastic amounts!

Anyway, you'll be able to take this mix and use what you learned to make the next one much easier to work with, I am certain.

Also, my offer to mix CH still stands...
If for nothing other than to demonstrate what I'm trying to explain here.

    Hey, Drumz.

The drums sound good to me. it could probably use some punch to the kick and the snares could be brightened up a bit in the mix. the sounds themselves are really good.

the overall mix itself is kind of muddy. that may be what you want for this genre, I don't know. the sound FX are coming thru good and clear, but the guitar and vocal are quite muddy.

    Good work overall!

I've gone back and forth with the flange on the guitar and I guess I just like it. It gives an effect similar to being in a helicopter in flight and that's part of what the song is about. I'm not married to it though so I will take another look at it. I will work with the vocals more and try your suggestions with EQ. As far as the quality of the singer, what you hear is about as good as I can get at this point. I'm not a singer and have no desire to be one. I am all I have in that department right now. Thanks for your advice, it is much appreciated.

Thanks for taking a listen and your comments. I started recording about two months ago and with the help of fine folks on these forums have gotten this far. I have a ways to go yet to get where I want to be with the tools that I have.

Much improved mix Drumz, drums are sounding pretty good now. I like the flanged guitar BTW, suits the track well.
Really just the vocal mix which lets it down, I'd try Jamz0r's suggestion to sharpen them up.

That break in the middle is great as well, really effective.

I put up another re mix so if anyone could listen and comment it would be helpful. I am anxious to put this baby to bed and move on.

Thanks for listening. I am a Doors fan so I'll take that as a compliment.

I did take JamZor's advice and hope what I've done makes a positive difference. After listening on Soundclick I'm wondering if the drums need to be brought up some now. Maybe I'm a step or two closer to a good mix.

I agree with opaque that the vocals are suited to the song, but I wish they were more distinct, make the lyrics easier to understand. I like the guitar hook behind the vocals in the verse.
