A comparison in LIVING COLOR!

OK, not in living color, but a comparison, nonetheless....

liebre recorded this song several months ago and kind of turned me onto it. I had never heard it before. It's from U2 called "October". What libre and I were discussing were the way the soundfont that he had used sounded on this particular piece. Well, I love the song after he introduced me to it and I decided to try it. But in my version, I've created one with "The Grand SE" from Steinberg's Virtual Instrument Collection and the other using GS3 Ensemble's Gigapiano II. The only difference (other than the obvious) is the reverb since GS3's reverb is built into the REWIRED sound and The Grand is inserted as a VSTi.

Let me know which one you like better and I'll tell you later which one is which!

Piano number 2 has a fuller sound. One has very harsh sound when you hit the keys to hard.

beagle, I'd have to agree that #2 is a fuller sound. #1, in the lower registers, does have a kind of harsh resonance. Nice piano work as well.

Though I do not care for either sampled sound, #2 sounds fuller to me.

    Beagle,

#2 sounds a bit fuller to me as well, but seems to have more effects on it than #1. #1 seems farther away, #2 seems closer but has overtones or some kind of modulations that make it murky to me. I might pick #1 for a fast honky-tonk, boogie or blues piece though, it might cut through a mix pretty well.

Congrats on discovering some early U2 .. their early stuff really communicates, great stuff.

My vote goes for 2 as well. Much nicer, more rounded tone, less harsh than 1.

Have to agree with Bill, U2's early stuff is really evocative, not so 'stadium rock' as later.

Thanks everyone for voting so far...wow! the results are overwhelming in favor of #2. I'll give this a little more time to see if anyone else wants to vote before I give away the big secret as to which one is which.

Chaz, if you're still around, would you care to elaborate more on what you don't like about either one or what you would like to hear in the samples that you're not hearing? Just wanting to learn... Thanks!

Hey--this is a fun post. Piano #2 is definitely better to my ears. It's a more authentic sounding sample set. The first one has shorter loops, and so has an unnatural sound to it, much simpler than a real piano.

Curious about this piano part being played, since it's extremely sparse. This is the piano part of a full arrangement, pulled out and soloed in this comparison test?--since it's not arranged to be a solo this way.--?

thanks for the vote, randy, I'll post the results probably tomorrow.

as for your question about the way the song is written, no, the song was written and performed on piano. on the original recording from U2, I can hear a synth as background for a little added bass and extra harmonies, but the piano part is a solo. there are very few lyrics to this song, just one short stanza, no repeating chorus. very interesting tune.

Well, although I agree, piano 2 is fuller, I actually prefer the brighter sound of piano 1>
Sorry to buck the trend, I tried to like 2 better, I just don't.

    Ok, the tally!

From this thread, AND from the poll I took on another forum:

    This thread only:
    Piano 1: 2
    Piano 2: 7

    Total with the other thread:
    Piano 1: 4
    Piano 2: 8

So, even tho the votes in the other thread were in favor of Piano 1, Piano 2 still won by a 2:1 margin!

    So.....here it is:
Piano 1 is THE GRAND SE
    Piano 2 is GIGAPIANO II

I'd be interested in how it would have went if I had a full version of The Grand 2 instead of the SE version. Maybe someday I'll post that contest!

Thanks for your interest and participation!

Beagle Just got a chance to listen to the two pianos. My first thought also was number 2, and because it sounded fuller to me also.

RE: A comparison in LIVING COLOR! 2006/12/06 11:09:28 (permalink)
    Interesting thread, Beagle.

I am pretty much positive that the reason The Grand SE didn't sound as good to most of us is because it's using a limited number of samples. I also think the samples are shorter and looped more closely after the attack.

I'm also sure that the difference between the SE and full version, is that the latter would be using more and longer samples, probably with velocity switching also.

The Gigapiano is more sophisticated in its programming. I'm sure if you looked at the file sizes that it's larger than your Grand.

The folks who voted for piano #1, The Grand, consistently said what they preferred was its brighter sound. This has been a topic sprinkled throughout various threads, and I've talked about it also--how our ears tend to like bright pianos even though that isn't the way actual Grands sound. Top of the line concert Grands have a full, round sound, which can sound "muted" when compared to the artificially bright sound we're used to hearing in pop music.

When I first started using the excellent Steinway Grand in the GPO program, I kept doing this radical EQ curve on it, forcing it to sound more brittle, ala pop---wrong. When I started re-mixing my earlier work with GPO, I changed that back to a virtually flat EQ and the results are much more natural. BUT, the style of music I'm doing with it doesn't call for that rock/pop piano sound.

    ANyway---Interesting!

Yes, I'm aware of that, randy. that's why I made the comment that it would be interesting if I could actually compare The Grand 2 with Gigapiano instead of The Grand SE.

I find your comments about the bright piano interesting. I think you may be right that today's pop culture wants to hear the bright piano instead of the full resonance of the fully sampled grand. HOWEVER, the results of this survey didn't support that.

Another little secret I'll let out: On The Grand, you can choose between Bright, Dark, Normal and something else (and I may not have those choices exactly right), I chose the Bright sound for this test, so the test is kind of skewed anyway...and it was based on the comments I remembered you making about bright pianos back when I was having trouble with GS3 and the very "tinny" sound that I was getting.

Another interseting aspect is that the majority votes for The Grand SE over Gigapiano from the other forum is the fact that whoever made the first vote, that's what the majority of votes were. I wonder if it would have been different on this forum if the first poster had liked Piano 1 instead?
