forensics noise reduction techniques

wondering if there are any experts around here willing to share some tips

broadband noise reduction is fairly easy - but getting rid of street noises or who knows what in order to hear background conversations - that's what I'm interested in. The usual techniques don't work. I tried phase cancellation and surgical EQ and compression and only got questionable results. Are there some tried and true techniques that you know of?
