OT: WMP 11 caused all kinds of crashes

Hi,

I don't know if it's just me or not - but after install Windows Media Player 11 (via windows update) I started having a lot of random crashes on my music partition. I've rolled back to WMP 10 (restored from a Ghost image), and everything seems OK again.

Has anyone else had any probs after installing WMP 11?

- Asus P8z77-V mobo - using the integrated Intel graphic card (HD4000)

I thought it was just my system!

You are not alone with problems with WMP 11; I had stuttering, crashes and system lock-ups. I also rolled back to version 10 and the problems are gone.

works fine for me on my net account. I wouldnt even THINK about putting it on my studio account. But, I also wouldnt even think about having the internet on my studio account, much less updating windows or having garbage system services on.

Crash - I thought it was just me too, but it seems that we're not alone. Mind you, a google search doesn't come up with hundreds of links to people complaining about WMP11.

Ognis - point taken, but it is a heck of a lot easier to just attach a music PC to the internet for your updates and activations etc, and just disable it when you're done. I run a batch file with a bunch of "net stop servicename" commands to turn off anti virus, auto updates system restore, de-activate network card, etc etc. I just stick it on my desktop and click it when I'm ready for "music"... (and another one to restart the services so I don't have to reboot)

Also - WMP is part of Windows, so you're not gonna live without it. I just made the mistake of updating to ver 11 ;)

This stuff doesn't really affect you music partition that badly anymore.... (just my opinion)

I have another "non music" partition too - and WMP 11 screwed that up too.

you can uninstall windows media player, sort of: [ http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/installation.mspx#q2_3 ].

i run sonar as admin on the same workstation i do everything else on, which has included gaming, web development, dvd ripping and movie watching and still includes surfing and listening to music. i patch every time a patch is available and i don't run AV. there isn't a single program running on my computer that i don't know about and my computer can go from desktop to restart to login in about 40 seconds (2.8ghz, 1gb ram, wd raptors). i run a minimum of services because i know what each service does.

the reason i am saying all that is to point out that you don't need separate computers, partitions or even accounts to run a fast DAW if you know what you are doing. if you aren't sure you know what you are doing then maybe a separate, low-privileged account isn't such a bad idea for internet surfing. if you like porn and warez and pictures of some guy's wife and free virus checks consider getting another computer...

two separate installations on the same computer may save you from some problems but it's nothing some common sense and nightly backups won't cover and you get that hard drive space (or hard drive depending on paranoia) back. basically if your computer gets owned you need to reformat. even if you know how to clean off a nasty infection it can be quicker to reformat and restore from a backup.

    hi Jack,

Can I just ask how you become an ex-cynic? Is it difficult?
