Forum Snobs (There Are Just A Few)

This is a great forum and most of the folks around here are really helpful. What gets me is when people make jerk comments about forum etiquette. I have seen people get blasted for spelling errors, or typing in all caps. What difference does this make? What really got me were some of the comments made to a 14 year old kid discouraging him from asking questions about how to make techo music by telling him "this forum is for pros" or that "this forum is only for sonar software issues". Give me a break guys. Frankly, what makes this forum great is the open willingness to help people make better music.

To the self righteous posters who are so "proffessional" that they feel annoyed by such "improper" questions or mis spelled words, just give us all a break and relax.

This being said, I understand completely that without some type of understood guidlines, forums would be worthless. I am simply talking about people getting blasted for innocent mistakes (minor mistakes that don't take away from anyone's forum experience).

I realize already that this is "off topic" to you haters so spare me. How is this relavent to Sonar? These type of posts litter up an otherwise very pleasant community of nice people.

In the end, who am I to tell anyone what to post. This is just one guys opinion. I would love to know that others think.

I agree with you. If anyone has a problem with posts or those who post, take it up with the Forum moderators. It's their job to keep things tidy, not ours. I know of two other forums where moderators move posts to other areas on a consistent basis and no one gets bent out of shape about it. Eventually everyone learns where things should go and it becomes less of a problem. Until then, if this is the kind of Forum that CW intended then let it be.

Smugness cracks me up. It is so transparent. It really makes certain types of people feel really good to criticize, demean, scold, embarrass, etc. In some twisted way they feel like it validates their 'superiority'. They can really let it shine on the Internet too (where they don't have to be a typically cowardly as they are in real life)!

I love it when someone asks a question and you have people posting replies or suggestions that have absolutely nothing to do with the problem the OP is having-- just the obligatory: "Defragment your hard drive", or "Try reinstalling!"-- thanks a bunch!

Usually the format goes like this:

I love these forums!

Many times i've read a reply to my question and wondered if the poster actually read the post or just guessed what i may have written based on the thread title.
This has happened with concise one line questions.

Or detours into a zig-zagging argument about something entirely unrelated (insulting the insulter, for instance; back and forth, ad nauseam).

I know that guy quite well and he didn't mean that the way you think he did.

The above quoted response to the 14 year old regarding this being a pro forum is a good example, I think. Is there really any malice there? Isn't it possible he was just being informative? I took it as, 'hey, you're not in the best place for what you want'.

I agree. I read Ognis' post for what it was - informative. In my experience, his posts always contribute in a positive manner. However, I think some people mistook the tone of his post this time and took away messages that weren't implicit in his reply. For example, his suggestion to learn FL Studio was not meant to be insulting, just useful advice to try an inexpensive and easy to learn, yet very powerful, sequencing app. When I read the OP, I immediately thought the same thing that Ognis did. So, I don't think that this is necessarily the best example of the OP's intended point. That being said (written?), I agree that there are too many others with the "RTFM!" mentality around here, but the majority are very helpful.

The way most people write is not very reflective of how they speak, or their disposition. It's really hard for most people to convey personality with letters.

My boss is a perfect example of this. He's a great guy to talk to, but his emails are so concise and neutral in tone that it's hard to know if he's encouraging us or threatening us with termination sometimes. Scares the he#$ out of new employees!

Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with some educational tips now and again, it is, after all, how we learn.

So stuff like "hey, you should change the thread subject", "please no all caps", "please include your system specs if you want us to try and help" are fair game, if not encouraged.

But, yes, there are some snide comments out there. Some of them are just blowing off steam and I don't there is malice in them. When you answer the same problems over and over and the requests for help start getting more and more like tech support the heavy hitters on the forum are going to code a message in there about self-sufficiency. This is, after all, a huge free resource for people.

And then there's the bad seeds (no, not Nick Cave and his merry band of drunken louts). It's the internet, it warps communication etiquette and some people just love to get their hate on. We all bear these people as best we can. I've been involved in a flame war or two in my day, so I'm not pointing fingers (at least not right now )

It's our lot in life, we police ourselves for the most part.
