"Perry Mason"

OK--Taking a breather from my search for more singers (see my last post here, looking for online singers---they're seeming to be Very scarce)--And dropping by to post something I did for fun recently.

Santa Claus brought me the Jazz and Big Band (JABB) Garritan library for Christmas. The first test drive I took with it was on my peppy version of "Auld Lang Syne"--I posted that here.

Then my partner Kate suggested I try doing one of our favorite TV theme songs--the one for "Perry Mason"--! Even if you're too young to remember the show when it was first on, I imagine that most Everyone in America has had that great jazz theme music drilled into their heads. It's one of the best TV themes ever.

So, I did my own arrangement of it, made it a little grittier and quirkier, and featured JABB, with strings courtesy of GPO.

Here it is, all one minute+ of it. Have yourself a '50's TV noir nostalgic hit:

    Nice.

    "Park Avenue Beat" isn't it?

Very impressive the way you can wrap your mind around (to me) a complicated arrangement.

    Hey, thanks Mark--

And Yes, the piece is actually called "Park Avenue Beat." You beat me to it--I dashed off the post so fast I forgot to say that--OH man, now I'm pulling a blank on the composer's name. But I'm impressed you knew that bit of fairly obscure trivia--did you Google it first? hehe.

The original arrangement is a little more spare, I just couldn't resist complicating the chords during my favorite part, that bluesy middle section. But it's actually a pretty straight forward and relatively simple piece--One repeating boogie pattern with great melodic variations on top.

    Thanks.

The name I remembered, but the composer requires google.

ThANk you, Mark--My bad. Terrible with names. When I was working on the project, there his name was in front of me, Fred Steiner, then--whoosh out the brain window now that it's a Whole month later. I would be a Terrible "Jeopardy" contestant--impossible to come up with info that fast. AH well.

Gotta love JABB though. Great horns, saxes, drums, bass, the whole kit. What a killer combo, JABB + GPO. I'm set, I don't need any more music toys.

That was a real hoot Randy. When they do the updated tv series, you'll have to get the nod to arrange it.

    Randy,

Great arrangement (love the trill/vibratos). Opening, so critical to this piece, done very well. Instruments are all expressive and animated. Sounds like you are having fun with your kit.

    Very cool Randy,

I was waiting for another one from you using JABB. What a great addition this is to your pallete. Great job on this, you definately have figured out to deliver a great performance from the JABB instruments.

You've got a great orchestra and a great big band at your fingertips. How great it must be to be a composer/arranger of your skills in these modern times.

Cracking little piece Randy, well done sir!

I don't remember the original as 'Perry Mason' wasn't big in the UK - 'Ironside' was though, and my Grandmother would always say, 'Ooh look, it's Perry Mason...'

Very nicely done, I enjoyed it hugely.

THANK you one and all for your comments. Very glad this was a hoot for you to hear, sure was a hoot to do, I'll tell ya.

Oh man, but James HAd to say, "...my Grandmother would always say, 'Ooh look, it's Perry Mason..."---OK, now I feel old.

BUT HEY--I was too young to understand the show when it was first on. I just thought it was all cool and mysterious. I couldn't even TALk yet, OOKaaay? I would stand in my crib and click my wee baby fingers to the cool beat. Ya know maaaaaan??

Hey Randy, thanks for this classic. I remember watching some reruns during the 80s ... Yes, your Garritan collection sure came handy already, didn't it? I hope I'll be proud owner of GPO soon ...
    Thanks for sharing.

One of my all time fave's .......TV themes.
You did it justice..(oopss unententional pun.)
    that JABB sounds real good.
did you work from scratch on this or did you have a midi file as a guide to tweak?

OT: Randy ...you ever think about creating a page where you can give some of us fellas that wan't to learn how to orchestrate ...a chance to learn from you?
I'm sure a lot of us could learn a lot from you....

Kenny, you spoke out of my mind: I always wanted to ask Randy the same question! It would be wonderful, Randy if you could tell us a bit about your experiences with orchestration, using GPO and Co., and a few tips ... but then again, you're busy as it is and don't need additional stuff on your plate, eh?

    Hi Randy,
    Very nice!
At :11 when the drums come in, they seem like they need more reverb and/or velocity.
They appear kind of small at first...sound fine as it progresses.
    Good one!

FUNny, Robert!--hehe---my version of “Perry Mason” as the sound track for your mystery solving at the office. Love it.

Heinz—You GO for GPO. You’ll love it. And don’t forget that a smaller version, the “Pocket Orchestra” is apparently going to be part of the Home Studio XL upgrade.

Mike, thanks for asking to collab again. I’m being realistic about my time, and will gladly collab with you and some other folks when I can!

And thank you RLB for listening. I know what you mean about the way I have the drums get stronger as the thing goes on. It’s the choice I made, for them to be cool and an unaggressive part of the ensemble at first, and then build.

Kenny—I found a MIDI file for this theme song, but oh man it was lame, and just plain Wrong in several places. Worst thing about that MIDI file I found was how literal the beginning of phrases were, “dum – dum –DUM – dum dum”—You know, the dreaded overly-quantized thing that happens on the tinky-tink MIDI files found online.

I went ahead and saved that file for reference, but started my version from scratch, since my intention was to do some new arranging on it.

NOW—Kenny and Heinz, you honored me with the request for a page where I could talk about orchestration and pass on some tips.

Thank you very much for that request. You inspired me to give that a whack, and I’ve already started writing something that I can put up at my personal website and post the link to. Just give me a bit of time—I’m leaving soon for a long weekend getaway, won’t be back until Monday afternoon or later, when I can work some more on the first page, as time permits.

Trying to write about music composition and the more technical aspects of using soft synths etc gets down to the purely subjective experiences of the writer. There’s no way I would attempt to write a simplified How To thing—much too definitive and Rule Bookish—ack!

What I’ll put up will be casual, conversational, maybe even not all that organized. But maybe it’ll give readers some ideas to think about and try out.

So, thanks for the request. I accept!—Just give me a little time.
