Raw Folk Song

Hi,

I listen a lot, comment once in while. I figured I'd post something I just finished. I always get someone to sing for me - listen to this and you'll hear why. Other than that (the vocal), I like it. It's rough, it's raw - but it's folk.

Twenty Degrees

Here are the lyrics

Twenty Degrees

Words / Music M. Ytuarte2007

Twenty Degrees, and I’m waiting out in this cold
Twenty Degrees, and I’m countin’ on you to show.
Maybe you’ll will, maybe you won’t, well I don’t know.
But baby you’re late, and I’m wonderin’ should I go…

Well I can’t walk that lonely road no more
Can’t I hope for something more somehow…oh, oh, oh

Startin’ to snow, it’s blowing all down the street
It’s a Cold hearted town, barely a pulse, barely a beat
A fitting farewell , so darlin’ don’t cha be long
Put this wind to your back, yeah, it’s time to be movin’ on

Take my hand and come away with me…
Find the place we were meant to be…oh, oh, oh lets go.

Twenty Degrees, and I’m waiting out in this cold
Maybe you’ll show, maybe you won’t, well I don’t know.
But I’ve gotta believe, so I’ll give it a minute more…

    Manny,

Nice personal vibe on this. Your voice works very well for this style - it totally communicates an honesty and a personalness (is that a word?) that draws the attention. Perfect for telling a story .. or singing a folk song. Nice minimal but supportive acoustic fingerpicking too. Nice production, it seems a tiny bit noisy but that totally makes it real. Good mix balance. The textures here really work well together and make the piece quite listenable. Good job on this Manny.

Nice vibe, I also thought the vocal fit the peice rather well. It sets it's own intimate mood. I like the little guitar harmonics probably accidental, but it's the little things like that make it so great to me. I thought the ending major chord felt out of place a bit or detracted from the "frigid" mood some.(nitpick) I would have liked to hear a bridge as I felt it wanted to build up a tad more. Great recording/mix though, nice and clean. Good work.

    Hey Manny,

I liked this very much. It has an intimate, personal quality and the vocals fit that nicely, in a Tom Waits kind of way. Lovely guitar picking, just right.

Your production is good too, not easy to get that right, even when it's only really guitar and voice.

Something popped into my head while listening - a low, lonesome cello coming in after the first 'Oh, oh' oh' - just a thought.

    Nice work,

    James

    Hey Manny,
excellent tune and production with a raw, earthy performance and sound.
I can't imagine anyone getting as much soul and musicality into the vocals and thought they were stunning.
    Good job.

    Manny,
Raw and honest in the way Tom Waits can be at his best (ah, just noticed James picked up on that too).

You can just see that guy stomping his feet to fight off the cold, hands stuffed in his pockets with a stream of breath fog flowing.

    Excellent!

Manny, the vocal was frighteningly appropriate for the theme. Man, you sound cold, internally as well as externally. Great song.

Okay, I get it, it’s one the following:

    1) It’s “Be Kind To $hit Singers Week”
    2) The “World’s Most Sarcastic Comments” contest has finally started
    3) You’ve all heard worse

Bill - yes, it’s minimal tracking and a bit noisy – I live in an apartment and the mic is just sitting here in front of PC. I flubbed some of the picking and the vocal was very, very rough but I kind of enjoyed myself. James mentioned cello – I’d thought of adding some strings and may yet do that.

Ed – I’ve heard you sing – you’re quite good – thanks for being so merciful.

James – I wanted it to come across intimate and personal just as you mentioned. I curse myself for not having a voice good enough to really pull it off – close but not quite there. But as I said, I kind of like it even though it’s a bit embarrassing in spots.

OS – I’m glad you got a kick out it and it’s very nice of you to open up to something so primitive and give it a good listen, let it touch you in a sense – thanks so much.

Ed/Mark/Joe – very nice of all to listen and take the time to comment. There’s so much different music on this site – folk doesn’t seem to be a biggy and yet you all gave it a shot – much appreciated.

Eventually I’ll find a male singer to replace my part (“do what I did – just mo’ betta’) and then I'll dig into the string section.

I love it when people don't realise how good their work is.
By all means get another singer on it but they'll never better that.

Hey Manny..... I almost never post in here. But I've listened to about 100 songs tonight on several different boards. This is my favorite.

PLEASE DO NOT replace the vocals. They are perfect for this song. Actually made me feel cold and lonely. Made me see the scene. Your voice is great for this. You have your own character.

Very enjoyable. I'd like to have an entire CD of this kind of stuff from you.
