Sync Steps To Drum Patterns: Rapture 1.1

Here's a basic tutorial on synchronizing the step generators in Rapture and drum pattern files. It explores the new 1.1 features: Extract Shape From Sample File and Normalize Step Levels. At the Rapture section of the Project5 Wiki:

    Drums!

    Oooh...shiney!

So let's see, 53 hits and nobody has bothered to say thanks? Jeez man, I think you need to find another line of work. I know undertakers who have a more appreciative audience. And their clients rarely need to be held by the hand, ask for "radio ready" beats or want an MP3 sample of what this cool little trick does.

I had fun with this little technique. Cool man. But come'on B...a two bar loop?? Can't you do better than that? I want to be able to use something slightly more complex as my pattern file. You know...like a Brahms symphony. I'll just wait right here while you come up with the answer, since I know you don't have anything better to do but sit around and give away great information for free...

Sheesh! You professionals are so demanding. Why can't you just be like everyone else? I suspect the news at the Project5 forum hasn't hit home yet. You're out of a job, my friend. Washed up. Obsolete.

Oh, well. In the spirit of easing the transition to head fry cook, I gave this a shot. I picked No. 4, and confined it to the main theme for oboe and piano. Will this do for now? For an ".mp3" example, see the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

    Sidebar - Techniques:

You'll want to use the new Step modes in Rapture 1.1's step generators; both in Amplitude and Pitch. Take advantage of the MIDI Note Entry option in the latter. For the piano, I'd use the Micropiano samples. The oboe? Well, traditionally, you'd start with some flavor of a square wave oscillator, one of the shallower LP filters, not too-too high of a Cutoff Frequency, ...

Will you 2 get a room already?

edit: Ok, now I feel guilty. B, this really is nice stuff - I tried it out yesterday - but by the time I was finished, it was dinner-time and the Margarita's were melting.
After that, I don't remember too much - sorry, my bad (Honey, where's my darvocets?) All I do remember is a strange number...6.2.1, ...6.2.1, over & over...

I wonder if that has any significance[sm=rolleyes.gif]?

Great stuff B! The confusing part for me is figuring out the Sync. and Step numbers. I understand it, but it sure takes a second though. This is really fun stuff, I've been meesing with the Global step Gens and inversing one against the other and then copying those to the two elements in the Kreamed lead patch to the various modulation sources. Makes my head spin against a nice drum beat. Weeee!!

I just got my copy of the Cakewalk Synths book and was happy to see I could figure out some of the secrets to programming for Rapture. But the new update changed that and I am behind again.
    Thanks for the update Tom!
