Get audio distortion when using Crystal Vsti

I'm using Crystal which is a vsti made by Greek Oak (http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/about.html). I am using it with Cakewalk Sonar 5 Studio, on a Dual Core PC, with WIN XP professional. The problem is that I ramdomly get audio distortion with this synth. The other day, I had my headphones on and all of a sudden and got this intense audio distortion right into my ears. Scary stuff! Also, I can't seem to control the volume of this vsti from the midi track it is assigned to, but I CAN control the volume by adjusting the volume on the audio track. I didn't see any where online people complaining about this same problem. I'm using a Creactive labs Extreme Music sound card. Please help.

    Not the best choiceof cards.

But you control the volume of any softsynth with the audio track paired with the synth. Not midi volume.
