Fire Escape---remix

This is a song i have taken down and tucked away to remix when i could....i still can't but did anyway.

It was written rather briefly and recorded even briefer.
I did have a lot of problems with it and will not go into detail as I'm curious if they're not as bad or far worse than I suspected.   Either way, i'm at a loss as to how or where to proceed, although my wife has recommended a few places..

so,
Jaspar Katinki on Piano
Bert Swerl on Guitars
Creighton Hack on Bass
Firth Thud on Drums
Tony Chauvanist on Vocals and
featuring the Pizzicato sisters on strings: Trixy, Pixxy, Dixxy and Mixxy

Thank you for stopping in to give an ear to my midlife crisis.

Is that Valentino in the icon?

    I like this song.

But the mix seems a bit extreme in the two ends...

I would cut in the 400 to 0 range (roll off) and start cutting the highs too. then bring the vox a bit further forward (drop the reverb).

    Cheers

Nice anti-intro. Catchy chorus. I know "Jaspar" is moody at times but if you're going to leave the upright in the next room (along with moody Jaspar), at least open the door (sounds like real interesting playing at around the 1:45 mark). Excellent vocs performance and great lyrics. Nice outtro.

The mix is a tad muddy in the lows (through the cans), but once this is sorted out, I know the brilliance of this piece will blind mere mortals into sweet surrender.

Was that before, or after the Pizzicato sisters showed up?

For a start, the high end is very harsh, and the strings are a tad loud...
Vocals are buried somewhat... but as always, an intriguing Rick tune...

Shad, Alegria, and Frank, these are great comments....just what i need to get to work.

I'll take down the high end...bring up piano...bring vox forward....articulate the bass a bit more...and tell the Pizzacato Sisters they need to back off.

    Tonight I'll be busy.

    Much appreciated!!!

Interesting track. I'm not really sure what to make of it musically to be honest. I like some parts of it, but not too keen on others.  The highs are very harsh at times and at one point i had to turn down the volume.

I have a feeling i would warm to this if the mix was tidied up. At the moment i'm a bit on the fence.

    Hello Blipp,

I appreciate the honest listen and critique.   I just now put up a rounder, less harsh on the high end, and more analogue-ish mix.  I also tightened up the bass a bit and took off a lot of reverb.

I hope i'm heading in the right direction.   It's very scary how 'off' i can be with my mixing.
These responses help a lot...as you know.

    Thanks!

    Hi Rick,

Wow, there's a ton a cool stuff in this. While I agree with some of the previous crits (I don't really hear the harshness, tho...guess I burned out those frequencies) I like the song. Nice piano intro, and the outro is great. I also like everything in between.

So after reading all the suggestions, I get to where you've changed the mix and realize THAT'S what I'm listening to...so I've gotta rethink everything I was thinking.  But that's OK, cause I didn't really know what I was thinking anyway.  (that's partly because of the 12 hour day I'm just finishing up...)  Anyway, if you've remixed this, I don't remember the first time you posted it and I was sure I'd heard all your songs.  But maybe you never posted it...  Cool and unique as ever.  I must say that if I hadn't read the words I would have had a hard time making out what you're singing.  So perhaps the vox still need to come up more?  I like to hear the words without having to try very hard.

I like the Pizzicato sisters.  They're good.  And Jaspar never ceases to tickle my funny bone while he's tickling those ivories.  Cool song!  :-)

It has potential, there's a lot of mix issues, I won't rehash, I have lots of input, but I would like to hear the next version.

    Rick

I didn't hear the original, but I think in the one I am hearing the vox could come up a touch (at least in some places).

Yeah like I know what I'm talking about.

The best way to fix it is to have a beer and tell the Pizzacato Sisters  to come over to my house.

    Hi Gary,
I took out (i think) most of the harsh high end last night.   (Anymore and my cymbols will sound like cardboard.)  I appreciate the kind comments and the listen.....Thank you!
    Janet,
12 hour day????  Yikes.  I hope that smoothes out.
I didn't think anyone really listened to lyrics!
I'll tell Trixxy, Mixxy, Pixxy and Dixxy you liked.
Jaspar is in rehab right now....when he gets out I'll convey kudos.
    thank you!

    Robby,
If there's a 'next version' then your mix comments on this version won't be needed...right? LMAO. There won't be another version....maybe a tweeking of the mix but that's it for this song.
    Thanks for listen.

    Ron,
I'll tweek vocals to a consistant level.
The Sisters are working on a schitzo in F minor.   Beer is big wisdom heeded.  Thank you for the notes and listen!

Style is strong and alluring here from the start.  My favorite yet (on 1st listen) (besides OITD of course)
    Bass drive is solid.

1:07 strings are absolute heart-wrenching!  I seriously love those.

    Some 2 cent crits:
Vox may need more saturation width and/or volume in the chorus(es) ... where things get nice and clanky.

Length is perfect.  Again this is my favorite of yours.  I'm really into this.

Your "2 cents" are worth thousands $$. ....i added some tape saturation to vocal and moved the piano over a bit to give vox more room...it's much better IMO...as always, you're right on.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and give me the pointed crits.

This is getting very good. I really like this song.

Bass seems to be in my left ear only. Same with the piano (though occasionally I hear it to the right. I would bring the bass back a bit as its a tad overpowering on both monitor and cans.

I would reconsider moving the piano for space. It has a wide spread and many things can sit well in front and not get too buried if they are more point source oriented. Move them instead and use the edges for reverb/echo/delay trails (much as you would hear if listening to a band live in front of you). Just some ideas and not necessarily ones you should follow.

Did I mention I like this song? I like the way you sing it. I like the dryer vox and mixes.

I listen to your songwriting when I hear your tunes, AND the off the wall musicality of your instruments.  I rarely get to the mix.  I couldn't help with that anyway.  RickNoHow, this is another songwriting phenomenon to me.  IMHO.  I've been so busy  (rehearsing live now) and with collabs that I don't get up here often.  Glad I heard this.  You are a treasure, buddy!

What a great song - interesting and surprising from start to finish!  I also didn't hear the original, nor this version before I think you'd made subsequent changes. To add my ha'penny the battle between the cello and violins from around 1:20 seems a bit extreme.  But I love the gtr at 2:30 before the break.  I'm listening on marshmallow headphones which could explain why the bass still sounds a bit rumbly.  Good stuff though - what I call an instant-triple-listener!

Your vocs are usually unusually full and perfect (in my amateur experience of you).

This mix sounds awesome!  But you do have a british accent here in places.

    Hi Shad,
I'm glad this is moving in the right direction.  I took off even more verb (but added a little bit to the outro).  I'm flattered you came by for another listen.
    Thank you!

    Warren,
Rehearsing for a live gig?  Fantastic.  Is it a regular thing or one show?  I'm very happy you snuck away to have a listen this tune.  It wouldn't be the same without your input.  Thank you!....and let me know if/when your band is touring out east.

    Hi Dena,
It's so nice to have you pop in.  How have you been?....busy as ever i'm sure but hopefully busy with more little pop gems.  I'm honored to be breaking in your cans.
THank you for the listen and comments!

    Hello Wood,
This IS the original and only recording of this song...i've just remixed it a few times and you wouldn't know it was the same song.  Thank you for the listen (3?) and kind comments.

    Dave,
I am so glad you got to give a listen.  I know how busy you are too and i do appreciate the time you took to give an ear and comment.
    THank you.

    Philip,
Joy likes???    Awesome.  If a child likes it I'm where I need to be.  Thank you for the return listen and kind support as it's priceless.   Keeps me going.  Thank you!

Another great one.  Like a lot of stuff that I have heard of yours this is not the run of the mill song but is again very creative and a bit out of the box.  Other than being excellent song, maybe that is why I like it so much.  I can't comment on the mix but to these old ears it sounds terrific.
