Fire + Tires = Bad idea.

So I'm watching TV last night and see a string of fire trucks go racing past my house. Look outside and I see this thick black cloud drifting in front of my house. Look down the street and see this ....

It was dark out so I set my camera on auto-exposure and put it on the corner post of my front porch.

The fire was going all day but nothing like this. The farmer knocked down an old barn and was burning it in sections. Well, it turns out he had a bunch of tires in the barn and he took a bulldozer and piled the barn rubble on top of the tires and lit it all on fire ... then left to go work his night job! We went down and looked at it while the fire fighters were there and you could see the tires smoldering.

After he left for work the tires got out of control and somebody saw it and called the Sheriff.

Crazy.

it's illegal in most places to burn tires because of that very reason.

A few years ago a small town near here had one of those things happen..a tire recycling plant went up in flames...we could smell burning rubber from 40 miles away...

I was having trouble breathing all day long yesterday and thought it was allergies. I figure now that he was burning the tires in smaller quantities all day and that's what it was. I'm still having trouble breathing today, no matter how deep a breath I take I can't get enough air. It's kind of scaring me now. :(

When I got up yesterday I saw a thin plume of white smoke coming from there and just figured he was burning garbage. Everyone does out here except for me. We pay to have the garbage picked up and make a recycling run twice a month to take in plastic containers, glass, and paper. I suppose I should just burn what's left, it's not much to be honest, and what we throw out goes in to a land fill. And it is fun to have a fire. Must be a guy thing. Heh.

I remember a similar incident in a small town in Quebec approximately 20 years ago. In fact, anyone who lived in Quebec at that time probably remember that one.

A fire in a storage facility - 3 millions of them tires burning for 4 days. I think it took like two years to decontaminate the place afterwards.

    Bad idea, indeed.

Why on earth would a farmer burn an old barn?? My guess is that there would have been a charge for the tires, some recycling fee and maybe he thought he could burn the tires along with the old barn and no one would know. Perhaps he should have buried them instead if that is the case.
Since they make things from old tires you would thin he could have sold them. That stuff that flies up from the artificial turf on football fields is ground up tires.

Bub, I hope you're OK. Do you have asthma? I have it but not all the time. Mine started in college and peaked over the next 10 or so years but I still get it sometimes. It is scary when you cannot breathe. Usually asthma prevents you from emptying your lungs, you can take a deep breath but can't seem to exhale much without wheezing and coughing... coughing up nothing until you get a treatment. OF course the treatments, thanks to Algore and his ilk, are not as effective because the gummit mandated a change in the propellent for albuterol. The new propellant doesn't seem to get it into the lungs as well. They make a home unit called a nebulizer that really helps. It mixes sterilized water with albuterol in a metered solution, changes it into a vapor and you breath it for 5 or 10 minutes and it really helps a LOT.
    Be well Bub.

I was wondering why he would burn an old barn too. It may have been too much to repair. He rented some big equipment and tore up the concrete floor and everything. It looks like a bomb went off. That's it, he would have probably spent a fortune getting rid of those tires and that's why he tried to burn them.
Bub, I hope you're OK. Do you have asthma?
No, I don't have Asthma. But, of course, living on a gravel road sandwiched in between two hog farms for 13 can't be good for your lungs. Doh! I still am having a hard time breathing. If it isn't better by tomorrow I may go to the doc.

The pile of rubble is still smoldering over there but when I drove by it looks like the fire department removed the tires.

Actually, being near a hog farm can be enough to trigger the body's normal defenses to shut down the intake of air.  I've found that if you are near a partcularly pungent hog enclosure, drinking a carbonated beverage will enable you to taste the stench all the way down to your roiling stomach.  It helps if the beverage is warm.

I helped out on a hog farm years ago...not something I'd be fast to put on my resume.
I remember the first day it smelled so bad I almost walked out of there. The second day it got a little better and by the end of a week I stopped smelling it altogether. The guy who ran the operation had a double wide mobile home set up about 500 ft. away. People looked at you if you went into the grocery store. You smelled like pig **** but eventually became immune to the smell yourself.
My (then) wife stopped hanging around me after work....not sure why.... I needed a smell endorsement from my wife after I took a shower because I had trouble telling if it was there or not.

If there is one positive thing that came of it. I believe that it boosted my immune system against all kinds of bugs.

I remember the Canada tire burning incident. It made the news over here......Bub ,there sure is a lot of excitement out there in the country. First, you have neighbor who may or may not be conjuring up illegal substances...or at the very least is engaged in some strange activity that is unexplainable so far and now a farmer who lights things off...really big things...and then proceeds to go to work while its burning. Its not boring out there where you are, no sir.

Before purchasing my home, our realtor took us to a house that was almost twice the size in sq. footage, with 2x the normal backyard size, only 3 years old, for about 50k lesser than the price range we were looking for.
Needless to say, after getting downwind of the nearby hog farm with a fertile soil to grow your most beloved garden, this was a no-brainer to move in right away (to the opposite side of town).

The hogs weren't there when we moved in. There's new strict regulations, but all existing farms in the state are grandfathered in so they can have up to 2500 hogs per building as long as the building is open at two ends such as a hoop building.

I had to put my septic lines on top of the ground and backfill over them because the water table is high where I live. Yet, 3/4 mile down the road from me they get away with burning tires, 200 feet from me they let them have 5,000 hogs with their waste running in to the ditch and in to the water table and tiles going directly to the river.

One of them was here complaining his taxes doubled a couple years ago. Oh boo ****ing hoo. They pay (after the tax increase) for 44 acres what I pay for 4. Plus they are paid to not plant certain crops, plus they are subsidized, plus ... ahh ... NM.

Must be good to be a farmer.
