FireWire to USB2

is anyone using a Firewire to USB2 adapter or cable?
i am trying to use a new laptop with  no TI firewire card, and an older MOTU firewire IO.
 
new laptop USB2 (no TI card)
Old external IO = Firewire only
MOTU Tech told me no way
 
i really don't want to buy new gear, everything except the laptop works great together.
