Firewire to USB
This is a bummer. I have been having trouble with my old laptop coping with my M-Audio Firefire 410 and Sonar Home Studio 6 and decided to upgrade my computer. I bought a nice new one 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, Intel Core i5, CPU M 450 @ 2.40GHz, 64 bit, Windows 7 Silly me, I didnt notice it didnt have a firewire port. Now I am told that firewire is being phased out and it isnt possible to convert firewire into a USB input... Is this correct? Someone said you can get such things off Ebay, but they dont work. A potential solution is an ExpressCard but I dont have a slot for that... Am I going to have to buy a new USB device instead? Groan...

no, you can't convert a usb port to a firewire port. they are completely different hardware architechtures. your laptop probably has a ExpressCard slot, tho, and you can get an ExpressCard with a firewire port in it to connect your 410 to.

I'm pretty sure it doesnt have an expresscard slot, just 3 USBs and a slot for a camera card described as a 2 in 1 card reader. The express card slots arent hidden away inside are they? Assuming I dont have one and will have to buy a USB version of the M-audio Firewire 410, what is the equivalent that I need to look at?

can you post the make and model or a link where I can look at the laptop you bought? if you don't have an expresscard slot then your only option will be to buy a USB soundcard. are the features of the 410 exactly meeting your needs and you see no need for expansion of that in the future? i ask because that's the kind of questions you have to ask yourself when you're looking at buying a new soundcard. also, what is your budget for this? look at my website for soundcard recommendations I have sevearl that may fit your needs.

If I have to buy a new USB input device, I guess that the equivalent to the M-Audio Firewire 410 would be OK... and the same price range.. I have looked at your recommendations. Which one do you think would be best for me?

yep - there's no expresscard slot on that one. similar to the 410 but using USB I would look at the m-audio fast track pro, the cakewalk ua-25, or the EMU-0404USB. the EMU has a fairly complicated mixer software, but is still a good system. you might want to stick with m-audio since you're already familiar with it unless there was something about it you didn't like.

eBay! I'm sure someone can use it! I'm using firewire but I have a desktop for my DAW.
