First Attempt For Realtime Synth Recording-HELP!
OK! I just need someone to tell me step by step how to do this! I read the ezine and still get no results! Please explain it to me as simply as possible. I've had a long morning and my concentration level is shot. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Andrew! You guys must look like the little squirrels in my backyard scurrying around! There has always been great support for me at Cake but WOW!

Thanks! Dan Gonzalez worked on them. It was actually in the works and the timing was good.

What happens once the "real time" audio is recorded? Does SONAR use the audio and ignore the MIDI? Is it like a "real time freeze"? Do you have to delete the audio clip in order for edits to the MIDI track to be respected? What if you delete a portion of the real-time-recorded audio track? I could probably answer these questions by trial-and-error but I'm curious as to what the 'intent' is.

The audio is simply audio - nothing more complicated than that. stickman393 Does SONAR use the audio and ignore the MIDI?
Not really no. If you have Input Echo enabled you'll hear both the synth and the audio that's on the track. To hear audio only hold CTRL and Mute the MIDI track that is feeding your synth. stickman393 Is it like a "real time freeze"?
Naw it's like Synth Recording!!! stickman393 Do you have to delete the audio clip in order for edits to the MIDI track to be respected?
Not at all, you can simply record another take and SONAR will store these in Take Lanes. stickman393 What if you delete a portion of the real-time-recorded audio track? Then you've deleted audio from a track - just like any other audio track. stickman393 I could probably answer these questions by trial-and-error but I'm curious as to what the 'intent' is.
Then intent is to allow you to capture your audio in real-time either during a performance or afterwards when you've made a bunch of edits to your MIDI and added long delays and reverbs. What's great about Synth Recording is that you have full control over these aspects of SONAR. They never existed before.

Might want to mention for those of us that really have not used Simple Instruments that you have to use the Synth Rack to load sounds in to whatever synth you inserted! My problem was I forgot you have to use Synth Rack to choose your patch! I couldn't get it to work by manually inserting the Audio and Midi tracks as usual. You have to use Simple Instrument and split the track as the video shows. Thanks, guys!

Not true. In post #2 above, no SIT was created, just inserted the synth with an audio and MIDI track.

I don't know how much trouble it would be to re-do the video but it would be an awful big help to go through the process but include the steps for using the synth rack to access and load sounds in to DimPro or Rapture, etc. after splitting the Simple Instrument. I believe that would be a big help for those of us who hardly ever use Simple Instruments or the Synth Rack. Especially, a newbie! I was still not getting loading sounds via the synth rack. The video has helped but that crucial step was missing. Not complaining! Just trying to help.

Wow Cakewalk staff , That looks like a real nice feature , also that is very good video …. Can you layer ? Meaning keeping the audio track you recorded in real time and changing the synth patch ? Kenny

So, the problem I have trying to record synth's in real time is MIDI/TRACK latency. In the video, it was a simple project with only a few tracks. What happens when a project has 50 audio tracks and 15 midi synths playing the synths in real time? That is, does latency rear its ugly head in this scenario? Just curious because I was underwhelmed by the video and wonder if I should be real excited? Jim

This is no different than dealing with latency in previous versions of SONAR. The latency experienced when tracking MIDI is the sum of the playback latency from the audio interface buffers and plug-in delay compensation. If the interface buffers cannot be set low enough, then the complexity of the project needs to be addressed. One way is bounce a temporary mix from the existing tracks, archive all but the bounced track. If the interface buffer settings are at their normal recording settings and latency is still a problem, it is most likely PDC. A temporary mix addresses this too but it might be solved by identifying the problem plug-ins and freeze those tracks or temporarily replace the plug-ins with tracking friendly plug-ins.

The video does kinda make it look like you have to start with a SIT (at least for newbies who are most apt to follow it to the letter.) Maybe making one or the other example with separate MIDI/audio tracks would make it more clear that it can be done either way. -Susan
