Finally getting around to trying to register / install VEP that I purchased from JRRshop a couple of weeks back.
Late night, out of coffee, not having a great morning...

Does this software require USB dongle?
I do have the eLicenser Control Center installed on my PC, but don't recall having a dongle...

Another question - should I register my all 3 licenses I received with the purchase?
Looks like I should...

I'm going to get some caffeine...

Didn't have a VSL account at the time (this was my 1st product).
So just to clarify - a usb dongle is required?

Re: First Experiences with VE Pro 5 and Sonar June 11, 16 7:46 PM (permalink)
Short answer is that all VSL products require the eLicenser (same as Steinberg, not the same as iLok).

Longer answer - if JRR sold you VEPro without checking to insure that you had an eLicenser then shame on them! I might be annoyed enough to ask them for a slight discount on one<G>. They know better!

So far my purchases have been direct from VSL, or second hand, which is very nearly direct from VSL, they handle all the steps. And all experiences have been good, only one had a minor bump (they are really strict about the dongles and chain of custody, and the seller and I thought we were clever - but VSL straightened everything out with nary a groan - at least none that I heard.)

Either JRR or VSL can, and will get you all fixed up - and I think you are really going to enjoy working with VEPro.

Thanks, appreciate the info and help.

Unfortunately there was no (and there still is no) info on the JRRshop webpage about the software requiring an eLicenser dongle - merely Download License! Email Delivery!
I would have bought VEP 5 anyway, but if I had know about the requirement I would have purchased the Vienna Key dongle at the same time!

I have placed an order for one via Sweetwater.
So for now I wait...

I'm now slowly venturing to set up vepro and just need to be aware of the possibilities in regards to template making.

Key switching or multiple tracks with articulations... are there any advantages either way?

It seems that ve pro can handle host loads of vsts.. But in template building would it make sense to use lots of ve pro instances for each part of the orchestra?

Re: First Experiences with VE Pro 5 and Sonar June 12, 16 10:17 AM (permalink)
Steven - VSL is pretty stringent, but it appears some of their re-sellers are not quite so attentive to detail. I'm sorry you ran into this, I think it is unacceptable. I made a couple of VSL purchases through Sweetwater, and they made sure I understood the licensing before they took my money. I have a couple minor quibbles with them, but overall they do take good care of me. I've also made a couple purchases through JRR, AudioDeluxe, and the like, and while I've received what I expected I just don't get the same warm/fuzzy feeling. Might be me, I am something of a curmudgeon I guess?

Elffin - building templates is a bit of an adventure (understatement intended). I'm still building templates, specifically for Sonar, and after several false starts I've settled on the following - please note that I am not finished, and I could discover this approach won't work either<G>...

I have multiple VEPro instances, each of which contains one VIPro instance, and multiple Kontakt5 instances. I am still experimenting with sticking 64 instruments into a single instance of Kontakt vs limiting it to 16, or less. I am launching every instance fully purged, and that is working well for me.

I then use Sonar's brilliant track templates to access the various instruments. I am still a the stage where I have to build them as I go, but I'd like to think that the will eventually become reusable (this would be a great opportunity for Cakewalk to introduce folders in folders - hint hint)

So far I've built the following VEPro instances - I can send you the detailed listings if they'd be of any use. Initially it looked like 1100+ instruments, and clearly I'd never use them all, nor could I even load them all. I've been trying to think the herd as I go. Most of the instruments fell into the last few categories, and they are things that I would hope I would not reuse, but you never know. My goal is to cut it down by at least half, and simply add an instance or two if Kontakt for those "add some spice" tracks.
  • Ensembles (I am slowly rolling all the family ensembles into this instance, not sure how that will work out)
  • Strings Ensembles
  • Strings Sections
  • Strings  Solo
  • Winds Ensembles
  • Winds Sections
  • Winds Solo
  • Brass Ensembles
  • Brass Sections
  • Brass Solo
  • Pianos (includes prepared and designed pianos)
  • Keys (pretty much every other keyboard except synths)
  • Choirs & Vocalists
  • Percussion - Handheld
  • Percussion - Found
  • Percussion - Cymbals & Gongs
  • Percussion - Orchestral
  • Percussion - Cinematic
  • Percussion Ensembles
  • Drum Kits (not sure if I'll keep this, I use Toontrack  Superior for most of my drum kits)
  • Sound Design
  • Experimental
  • Sound Effects (very little here, I have 150GB of SFX libraries that I am too familiar with)
I hope this gives you some ideas. I will share that I've been at this for 6 or 7 months now, working out how I switch articulations, how I group instruments, and just understanding some of the underpinnings of VEPro. I'm also still using a single computer, I really need to add another machine to host VEPro!

I do have a second machine in the studio, and I have an instance of VEPro on it, specifically for synths - which require CPU but not a lot of memory. It is an older build (Q6600, 8GB) and works well for that. I'm also using it to host my Frontier Design Dakota/Montana, four Tangos, and a Sierra. This provides me with 32 analog inputs which I use for some of my old synths. I'm looking for time to try SilentWay so I can use the outputs to drive a couple of ancient synths too<G>!

My only minor gripe is that the user interfaces for the remote processes require some hoop jumping. I've tried Multiplicity (or whatever it is called these days) and really like it, but it requires additional monitors, and I really don't have  the space (or $) for that. For now I use VNC and it works, but it lags.

Have fun!

Thanks for you guidance and input wst3 -  thats an extensive list!!!

So if you have the time i'll ask more questions!

1) Can I assume purging the kontakt instances saves memory until used?

2) With such a template - how do you go about printing it if it needs to  - do you merge the instrument tracks (say violin 1  and their articulation tracks) and then... export to Sibelius/finale etc?

3) Would it be better for me to go with a modular approach? Ie basic instrument template and then add the 'extras' ...   just 'afraid' of getting lost in the template/sound choosing rather than concentrating on the creating..  I suppose thats really down to workflow and trying out what works.

You are quite welcome, and believe it or not, that's not a huge template<G>... but it is becoming a very useful and usable template.

Yes, loading purged, and background loading are both really helpful when it comes to managing memory.

I don't... I start in Finale, import or play into Sonar, and then if I need to make changes I make them in the Finale version. It is cumbersome, but it is the best approach I've come up with.

If I knew the answer to that...

That's what I've done for eons. It works. I'm used to it. Frankly, I'm not 100% certain why I am chasing after the template - except that something tells me that  once I've put in the effort it might truly be a time saver.

We will see.............................................................................................

Just got my Vienna Key - I've registered it with the Vienna Symphony site and it's working with the eLicenser Control Center.  Any point in or benefit to registering it with MySteinberg as well?

If you ever plan on using Cubase, or several other products, it certainly doesn't hurt...

Apparently the Vienna Key eLicenser is not recognized by Steinberg's web site:
There is no eLicenser with this number.

Not a problem at the moment but good to know.

You may have to have a Steinberg Software title applied to the
eLicenser before you can register it....
