First Song Post
Have been listening to all the great stuff on here and thought at some point i am going to have to take the leap myself . I am currently working on a few things so will probably post stuff for comment/advice as they are ready. This is still work in progress. The vocal has now been redone and is ready to replace the guide vocal done here. Also every time i mix or remix a song i am learning something new so will probably re do this mix too. Hopefully I have set up the link so it will work http://soundcloud.com/stuartbroughton/it-must-be-nice-3-exp/s-oQDxe

Very nice. I can't wait for the finished tune. Things to look at are boomy bass tones, and slightly phasy mids. Keep up the good work! Shad

I'm with Shad on this, will keep an ear for the re-mix, perhaps a little separation and positioning in the mix would be nice and the vox is a little out front. Thanks for sharing.

Are these your vocals? Whoever did them sounds great. The music style goes perfect with them. I really enjoyed this. the mix could be a little fuller but overall not bad at all.

Thanks for you comment. No its not me, i work with a friend and his wife. They do the music and i do the 'production'. They work really well together and are writing some great stuff. I just need to keep climbing the learning curve to do it justice.

I like this tune. It's a little off the beaten path, and that's OK by me. I like the vocal being up front. All too often, decent vocal performances get lost under the instruments when they are the centerpiece of the song. I'll look for the next mix.

I like this a lot - I agree with Lynn that the vocals don't want to get lost but the percussion really needs to be brought out. I would start mixing with the vocal and percussion only then bring up the guitars

I like this song. I'd go back and work first on some of the lower frequencies...really think about giving each instrument it's own space...it's a bit muddy right now. The stereo field is probably something to spend some time on as well. Also, the "lead" acoustic guitar sounds a bit funny...is there a slap delay on it? Is is recorded with pickups maybe (instead of mic'd)? It's a bit lacking in mids and roundness. Really interested in hearing some more work done on it... Good luck Dean

liked it. mix itself didnt bother me, but prefer more tightening of the song with the rhythm. Feel like im out in spain man. Good vocal really helps it stand out. This track is worth going back and tightening up that extra 10-20%. Good stuff, Cian

Nice to have you on board, well I'm pretty impressed. Great song, really cool arangment. The vocal was excellent, you say its a guide, somtimes guides become the propper vocal. The musicianship is superb! Nice work!! Neb

Hi there Stuart This is a really good start. As others have said, there are a few aspects that would be improved with the odd tweak here and there - for me the acoustic guitar doesn't sound very 'natural' - but for a first outing here, this is very impressive. Steve

I'm not sure if I'm hearing artificial reverb that's not set correctly or if I'm hearing funky small room reflections but something is awry. Foxwlofen referred to it as "phasy mids". If it's artificial reverb that's causing this, then you'e in luck because the fix is just a few mouse clicks away.. I enjoyed the louge vibe very much. J

jsaras If it's artificial reverb that's causing this, then you'e in luck because the fix is just a few mouse clicks away.. Yes it is artificial reverb. This is one of the thing i haven't got my head round yet. I just add some in until it sound about right, but i have no science or method behind what i am doing. Any advice on this would be very welcome. I am using the Sonitus reverb by the way. Thanks for all the comments, this is really encouraging. I have been mixing the backing for another song which we are recording the vocals for tomorrow. I have kept everyones comments in mind with that one. I am going to post it without the vocal first so any comments would be welcome. It's called Monroe.

I'd have to have a peek under the hood to make more specific reverb setting suggestions. That said, the Sonitus reverb works best with mono input sources that are panned right down the middle (like a vocal or a snare). It doesn't do as well with stereo inputs (most synths) or sources that are panned beyond 25-30% in either direction. In short, it's not a true stereo in - stereo out reverb.

This is probably a very fundamental question but do you mainly add reverb to the tracks or the master bus. what you are saying about sonitus makes me think it wouldn't work well on a stereo bus

Nice tune! Since it is a "work in progress" I understand it is still in the rough somewhat. Thats the nice thing about this. You can continue to work at it until it makes you happy. Still not bad at all!
