First Studio Monitors On A Budget - Three Models

I have limited space and don't want to spend more than $200, just need a set to get started.

There are at least three brands/models that could work, M-Audio BX5a, Cakewalk MA-15D, KRK Rokit Powered 5 G2.

p.s.  I just noticed the new monitors thread and there are other threads here for me to review, but would appreciate any feedback on these.  Thank you for all  your help.  Love these boards!!

In that price range...... hummmm.... I would recommend a trip to the local Sam Ash or Guitar center....maybe both...

Go into the recording room and listen to a few pairs.  Buying something sound unheard, is a bit of a risk. While they are all supposed to be flat...... they all have a unique sound.  So go in and listen, then make a choice.

I would want to have a slightly higher budget.... maybe $350 for the pair.   You can get some nice speakers in the $300 price range..... but again... go and listen to them in the store first.

i would suggest the same thing...

    sell something.....
    save your money up...
and make purchasing a set of monitors that you're not going to want to get rid of in 2 months, more of a priority.

If you're auditioning monitors, remember the golden rule - you're not listening for what sounds "the best"

You're listening for their ability to let you hear into a mix, to isolate the different instruments in order for you to make effective mix judgements.

Last year I bought a pair of KVK 8's for 350 locally off craigslist.  I am extremely happy with these monitors.  The previous owner was upgrading to Tannoys.  There are deals out there just look around.

Thanks for input.  I grabbed a set of KRK's from Musician's Friend.  Reviews were pretty good, and they're in my budget.

Lava Lamps are probably a little harder to find, and go for top dollar I'm sure:)

The Lava Lamp is essential studio equipment.
My mixes are 20-40% better if I have mine turned on.
You can get one at Wal-Mart.
