When I was a kid, I loved them. No bones. The only fish I had up till then was pan fried, fresh water fish like Brim or Blue Gill. You spent most of the meal picking out bones.

Then I had good deep water fish from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. So I don't care for them as much now. But if I'm hungry, I appreciate anything.

Ah, yes Fog, seafood sticks, yes very tasty. In the UK, we had a tradition which seems to have gone, of having a travelling seafood salesman visiting a rota of bars and pubs on a regular basis. In my local bar 20 years ago, "Mr Super Cockle" used to visit every Friday night in his dashing white jacket and basket of seafood snacks at around 10pm, I would always get a packet of five seafood sticks, perhaps more if in the company of a young lady (yes I knew how to wine and dine the gals) and a small polystyrene tub of cockles or whelks with a dash of vinegar to devour with a cocktail stick which was supplied free of charge. The seafood sticks were enhanced by the addition of a meagre portion of "seafood sauce" otherwise known as thousand island dressing. Now we are talking.........

C'mon guys, let's not go overboard here... (bah dum bum... thank you, I'll be here all week... don't forget to try the veal).

Fish sticks should not (can not) be compared to an actual fish meal on any level. "Fish sticks" is it's own type of food.

It's like asking: what's better -- prime rib cooked to perfection, or a greasy hot dog covered in relish and mustard? You just don't make that comparison, because a hot dog, while similar in concept to other meat products, is it's own type of food. Kinda like Spam is, well... Spam. In fact, hots dogs may even belong to their own unique category of food -- the hot dog category, perhaps consisting of hot dogs of various makeup (pork, beef, turkey, tofu, other a.k.a anything goes a.k.a. "the classic weiner"), sausage, bratwurst, and the like.

I would also hesitate to compare fish sticks with a McDonald's Filet 'o Fish sandwich. While similar in taste and consistency, the gastronomical objectives of each product are distinctively identified. One does not put fish sticks on a hamburger bun for consumption, nor does one disassemble a Filet o' Fish into component parts eating each part seperately. Fish sticks are meant to be lined up on a plate in neat and orderly rows, augmented with an appropriate helping of tartar sauce, and eaten one at a time. Eating a Filet 'o Fish sandwich is an entirely different experience, to the extent that the foods "taste different".

Some other food items that are there own class/type of food:

Tater Tots -- just fried potatos, right? Wrong! They're Tater Tots, damn it! You bake 'em on a cookie sheet in the oven... There's no frying involved, duh!

Ore-Ida "Golden Crinkle" Frozen French Fries -- also baked on a cookie sheet (for proper treatment). No frying involved. The taste... well, reminiscent of potatos, but the distinct texture of freeze-dried vegetable matter makes you forget you're eating a potato product... it tastes like "frozen french fries".

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese -- why, that's just pasta and cheese, right? No, no, no, no, NO! First of all, KMC is most certainly not "just pasta and cheese". Second, a real macaroni and cheese meal involves 1.) a packet of powdered cheese, and 2.) a full stick of butter (as per instructions). Anything having to do with "cheese sauce" is just a sad attempt at imitating a classic, and anything involving real cheese just totally misses the point entirely . Anybody can use real cheese. Only Kraft gives you that wonderful, glowing, orange powdered goodness. It's like a heavenly food angel sprinkled her magic cheese dust onto my taste buds.

Kool-Aid -- a drink quite like no other. What seperates Kool-Aid from other types of sugary tonics is that when you're drinking a glass of Kool Aid you actually forget that water is involved in the process of making Kool-Aid... I am of the belief that when mixed with the crystalline Kool-Aid compounds, molecules of water take on a different form. Perhaps extra H's or O's involved, I don't know. I'm not a chemist.

Jello (any flavor) -- this is a no-brainer.

Fish Sticks -- as per earlier conversation.

Hot Dogs -- combined with Kraft Macaroni and Cheese... mmm, a classic American culinary delight.

    others?

    See, when I was a kid, a Tot, was ... a kid.

So, are the consuming of Tater Tots some sort of repressed Hansel and Gretel like sociopathic behavior?

When my daughter was 11 they did 'domestic science' at her school - one day I picked her up and she was clutching a carton. I asked her what was in it, and replied 'Fish cakes Dad, I made 'em, and you can eat them for your tea if you want!!'.

She opened the lid to reveal 2 grey piles of the most appalling goo you've ever seen..'umm..yeah, sorry Dad, I did drop them down the stairs, but I think they'll be OK!' she beamed.

She closed the carton, and I noticed what she'd scribbled on the lid -

    'Fish Cack'

Never was a spelling mistake more apt..
