"Fit to Time" not working for me

ok, so I'm trying to create a tempo map using the Fit to Time feature.  I have an audio track - a whole song; I arm a MIDI track, record a note for each beat of the song, select the track, choose Fit to Time and nothing happens. (I'm following the instruction manual on this one) - Shouldn't the tempo map show me all the variations of the tempo as the song goes along?  and shouldn't the beats - 1,2,3,4 now match the song?

It's worked before, not sure why not now.   Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Do you have a MIDI note at time zero? I seem to remember this is essential.

    Cheers, Peter.

Checked it out - seems it doesn't need a note at the start. But I did notice the command is called "Fit to Improvisation". It looks like you used "Fit to time".

    Cheers, Peter.

I don't use the Fit to Time feature much... so I may be mistaken but it seems as if you are asking for the results you might expect from Fit to Improvisation.

If you are working to Fit to Improvisation make sure you slip edit the performance you are trying to fit  to the start point and then slide it and the MIDI beats to "0"

Also make sure you make a copy track of the MIDI beats if you want to use the MIDI beats for reference later.

    Good luck.

    best regards,
    mike

yeah, that was it.  When I tried the improv before I left my 'reference' midi track on and it made the timing seem off (obviously) and so that's what made me think it didn't work.

    Thanks!
