Fixing single key on Fatar keyboard
I'd appreciate any ideas folks have about this. I have a weighted Fatar keyboard (a studiologic 990, I think...I can check if it makes a difference!). I have a single key that when played hard sort of 'bounces out' of position: The front of the will stick down and need a good bashing before it will trigger again. I don't want to send it out for service given the shipping weight, so I'm left with the option of poking about myself. Anybody encountered this or fixed something similar?

Order a new key, open up the keyboard, replace it. Not that hard to do.

Thanks Timidi - I'll be brave and see if I can track a key down...dealing with Fatar is not fun from what I hear.

What I've done in a pinch is steal the same key from the upper end were it's not as missed. They are usually numbered as each key is different shape. there are about 50 screws and some might be different sizes. I color them with a felt pen. Then I take digital pictures as I progress into the operation so I can find my way back. I've done a Casio, Roland and a Yamaha. All where about the same quality of build.

Well, fellas - I've given it a shot ;-) Maybe you can help me as I seem to be falling at the first and most basic of hurdles. I can't get into the damn keyboard. I've removed all the screws on the underside of the keyboard (a Fatar SL-900 Pro) but I'll be buggered if I can actually disassemble the plastic casing. Now I know it *must* be possible and there's got to be something obvious that I'm missing - is there some trick to this? The parts simply don't want to come apart. Even more worryingly, there are clearly loose components inside this thing because it rattled around alarmingly when I lifted it off its stand. I do not have a good feeling about this.

Hi Craig I hope you are going OK with this. There are two things you are going to have to do. One is to dis assemble the Keyboard as you are doing now in order to get inside. Just dont force anything and keep undoing screws. You may undoing the wrong screws eg you are undoing screws that are holding other things underneath. And not un doing the correct screws. Just make sure you keep all the screws in a safe place. Then once you do get in there you will find you often need to get the actual keyboard action out. It is often screwed in fairly well. After releasing it you should be able to lift out the keyboard action completely. There will be a cable connector or two connecting to the keyboard action itself. Ususlly you cannot get to individual keys until you get to this stage. But you might be lucky and be able to remove individual keys without taking the keyboard action out. Be careful getting individual keys out as well. Some of these keyboards have tricky ways of holding them in place etc. To get black notes out you often have to take out the whilte notes either side of them too.

Inspect the case for stickers and such that may be hiding one final screw. Look around the clam shell seams for a small slot that a screwdriver may fit in as a lever. Inspect the seam to find any clip points. I pulled a case apart recently and got most of it apart but broke the last two clips... bummer... in that case it was the price I paid for DIY. Without specific instructions I was lost and had to decide "this way or that way" and I made the wrong choice :-) Don't be bashful about finding the service enter and calling them for a chat. Many folks are happy to help. I really enjoy music-electronics-forum.com as the users there work on gear all day long. I'll bet you can find someone who has specific knowledge of the Fatar on that site. Good luck, mike

Well, whaddayaknow. I took Mike's advice and posted at the Music Electronics forum, as well as the homerecording forum. I got good advice at both places, and especially at homerecording because there was a two-year old thread (still alive, somehow!) on replacing Fatar keys, albeit for a different model http://homerecording.com/...-268410/4/#post3554130 http://music-electronics-...post192813/#post192813 I also found a helpful Youtube vid: [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTnXZK4NaaU ] featuring a fella modding a Fatar board. Long story short, it's all good! I had missed not one, but six screws (and if that sounds stupid, I promise you they weren't even visible when I stuck a flashlight into what I'd assumed were vent holes!)
