Flash BIOS??

I run SONAR 8 on a Dell Precision WS380. My BIOS is ver. A02, Dell is now up to A09.

Has anyone here ever flashed theier BIOS? It's not something I've ever done. I downloaded the update and read the install instructions, all seems very simple but.... it just seems kind of scary to me. Am I just being paranoid? Can it be rolled back if it messes up some function I need?

BTW : Dell lists the BIOS update as "recommended". There are also several other updates for my computer, including one for the chipset marked "urgent". Should I just leave well enough alone or bite the bullit and update everything and hope for improvements?

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

In circumstances like these I've always abided by 'if it ain't broke, then don't fix it'.

Trust me - I've had several panics from being a little over eager!

All in all things work well but have occasional OS hangs, won't shut down, have to kill it and restart. Not real often but, it happens Supposedly, that's one of the things the BIOS update addresses.

If you are comfortable with computers do it, if you aren't decide whether you want to skip it or find a friend to help you :)

    There's the answer...
If the BIOS update is going to address an issue you're having, it's certainly worth the time/effort.
Just read the instructions... and follow them exactly.

    What Jim said.

I'll add that flashing the BIOS on newer Dell systems (less than a few years old) is as easy as it gets. Just run the executable, and answer the prompt to confirm the new BIOS version... it'll reboot, and you're good to go.

(Of course, don't have 20 windows open, or be in the middle of a defrag when you do this. Basically if you just use a bit of common sense, you won't have any problems).

Exaclty. If there's a specific issue that a flash may address then fair enough.

I flashed mine to see if it would make any difference to a UAD1 card I had which did not work. It didn't and was concluded that it was a faulty card. However, what the Bios update did do was that it no longer allowed me to have my OS HD as boot up drive. I had to manually select it at bootup every time or it would hang. This was a minor annoyance mind you.
