Fleetwood Mac "Dreams" Mix

What do you think of this mix? I think the snare and crash cymbal are too hot. When it plays/played on the radio, the broadcast compression really sqaushed the dynamics so it sounded good.  On a high-end audio system, the real mix is more apparent and I have always thought the mix was very unusual.  It's like they were playing it back so loud in the mix that they were naturally compressing the dynamic range.  Maybe they were pretty high as well. I am sure it sounded great as it all went down.
What do you think?

I see what you mean.  I always thought it was clearly emphasizing the bass as a backbeat so it's one of the things that propelled the song into fame.  But you're right, on a different system it becomes more pronounced.  Kind of like trying to do your own mix of your own stuff and hearing it sound not quite right on a different set of speakers.

By the way, if you like the song Dreams, this performance and this rendition in the link below is really special. If you watch it you might dig it.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Interesting thoughts, made me go get the CD and have a listen, which just proved to me that there is nothing quite like listening to the original CD.

Listening to old cds brings back some memories that usually hide in a dusty cupboard.

For those of you not old enough (or too young to remember) this album was a huge worldwide success selling over 47 million copies.  It was certified "diamond" in some countries.
Here's a summary:
Rumours is the eleventh studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac. Largely recorded in California during 1976, it was produced by the band with Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut and was released on 4 February 1977 by Warner Bros. Records. The record reached the top of both the United States Billboard chart and the United Kingdom Albums Chart. The songs "Go Your Own Way", "Dreams", "Don't Stop", and "You Make Loving Fun" were released as singlesRumours is Fleetwood Mac's most successful release; along with winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978, the record has sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all timeRumours has received diamond certifications in several countries, including the US, Canada, and Australia.

I find it interesting that we work hard on recording, mixing, and mastering but sometimes if you step back and listen to records that were huge hits, it can be surprising what you find. If I was mixing this song Dreams, I would have brought those drums in line but then maybe that would have made the song not as popular!

That's the one Ed drums have nearly always been prominent in their mixes.

don't forget also that youtube is streaming audio at 128kbps.  the mix would very likely sound different from a wave file.

This used to be true at one time, but the last few years has seen a dramatic improvement in the audio stream quality of YouTube. In fact a 720p/1080p upload like this one streams at a cool 384 kbps, and not only that but it's AAC encoding as well which is vastly superior than MP3 at the same bitrate. You can find the info here:

It's for this reason that I cannot understand why people still instinctively reach for Soundcloud to host their music - it only streams at 128kbps.

Yes OK I could have dug out my original vinyl of the Album and put it on the Rega and had a listen Reece, but I did mean the original first release CD rather than the new all fully digital remastered (Loudness etc. dumb de dumb) version that is now available.

correct, but the link that Rimshot first posted takes the user to a default of 480p and 128kbps.  if you don't change the default when it appears on your screen and starts playing, then that's what you get.

Yeah the first thing I do when a YouTube video loads is to change the bitrate to the highest available. I'm pretty sure that there's an option to select "highest available" by default, but like many of the YouTube options it doesn't work properly. Maybe I'll check it out again seeing as how Google are changing the YouTube layout and options like 60 billion times a week.
