Fly
This song is my advice to my daughters, as they get married and leave the nest. One of my daughters is getting married in less than 2 weeks... the other is in college.... life is changing.... so I thought I would write a song of advice to them both. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12350209 My original plan was to play this acoustically at the wedding..... however, after my daughter heard this, she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said.... this is beautiful, but you can't play this at the wedding because I would be a total basket case with all the emotion going on that day..... knowing how many times I choked up while writing this.... probably a good idea not to play it there.... So... have a listen and enjoy.

I like this one a lot... My daughter's wedding was at a plantation in Charleston... I could have bought her a new car, for what that wedding cost... oh well, at least she flew the coup... Great song Herb...

Frank... thanks.... yeah I hear you. All these so called reality TV shows about weddings and dresses have really taken things out of perspective on a financial sense. I was able to give my daughter a nice amount of money, which she was free to do with as she pleased.... spend it all on a wedding (which would be foolish) or have a nice, but simple wedding and bank the rest as a kick start on their new life. She chose about 50/50 which was OK with me. This wedding is at an historic house in Va in the mountains.... quite the history on the house.... supposedly haunted, or so they say. The owners don't let anyone stay there at night... I was so disappointed. Glad you like it.

Nice song, Herb. Weddings can be expensive. I spent a whopping $300 on mine including the rings and dinner for everyone at a steakhouse. My co-worker is getting married and plans to spend $30,000 on the wedding. I told him he should spend up to $5,000 on the wedding and save the rest for the divorce.

That's funny Scotty. My wife and are celebrating our 30th year of marriage on June 26th. I was a long haired musician with no daytime "real job" at the time we got married. Her parents spent as little as they could on the wedding. It was in her front yard and the reception was a "pot luck" on the side patio. The people who spend tens of thousands would really be better off to keep it simple because the dollars spent do not equate to the success of the marriage. We started with nothing, but we did not start married life in debt. Thanks for listening to the song.

One daughter married, she kept her wedding expense somewhat in check, but she married a doctor and now she is a doctor. Definitely off my payroll now! Nice song Herb, maybe a tad to much reverb on the vocals, but nicely done. Nice lyrics. Daryl

I like this song. I am normally no country music lover, but with this subject, it just fits (much better than metal etc). my boy is too young (just one year!) but I bet it must be ackward to watch him leave the house...too bad that you will not play this live at the wedding, maybe your daughter will change her mind!

Hi Herb - What a great song. Had me in tears so I am sure your Daughter made the right decision. Huge amount of love in this song and your children are very lucky to have you as their Dad. (Sorry Herb, but I hope you will excuse me making a second comment after I read Scotty's advice to his co-worker - Oh what a wise man Scotty is! His comment had me in tears of laughter! I wish he had have been around to advise me when I got married!).

Herb, Nice job here. The songs that mean the most to us and come from the heart always come out the best. You have a very "Willie Nelson" type delivery on this one. I like it a lot.

Good lyric and tune. I listened to this, two times. I thought the vocals had a bit to much reverb. You do have something good here, good production!!!

None of my daughters are married yet. Lovely tune. Mix and production top notch. I especially like the pedal steel and the mandoline they go so well together. Very enjoyable listen.

Hi Herb! GREAT tune!!! Only one comment- Country music is ALL about the lyrics... so give yourself a little more makeup gain in your vocal compressor to get out front a tad more and tell that story in my face! I had to struggle a little to get a few words.. Great job!

Terry , KS, and Clint: Thank you. I mixed this mainly on cans I think with a check on the speakers so the verb may be a bit heavy.... next time I'm in the studio I will listen for that specific issue. I love the mandolin and acoustic guitar mixed with fiddle and steel. I'm not a heavy blue grass fan but I do love the qualities each of those instruments have and especially when mixed together. I'm so glad I bought that mandolin. Thank you again for listening.

Herb, I've listened to many of your tunes over the past several years. This one, by far, is one of my favorites. It's heart-felt, honest and to the point. You're a good songwriter, with the intuition that songwriters need, to write something that relates to us all. That being said, I feel you got a bit lazy with the second half of the first verse. Make it a bit more interesting. I'm pretty sure that you already know this. Lastly, I don't feel that the recording is going to get this song noticed, if that is your ultimate goal. I had to think on it for a bit. Your voice is rather unique, and you might get away with a more abstract vocal style, but I don't think that this is the song for it. As always, just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth. Darin

DarinBad, I appreciate you listening and your perspective on this tune and the recording. The goal with this tune is accomplished by having written it. Nothing commercial intended, just a message to my daughters and some advice in song for them. Thank you for listening and your comments.

My bad herb. I often skip reading the description of a song to avoid any preconception during listening to it. Maybe I should reconsider that practice... I find your work interesting and would love to see you have some success with it, which I guess is why I listened to this song within the context of commercial viability. Sorry about that. I should also clarify that I don't think the recording is bad at all. I like it overall. I do think you went a bit heavy on the reverb, but I really like the instrumentation you chose. My only real crit is the vocal performance. It's hard for me to put my finger on it exactly, but this particular take seems somehow disconnected from the song. It's not that you have a bad voice ( I like your voice) or did a terrible job at singing it, but somehow, it just doesn't seem to 'fit'. I'm at a loss as to how to adequately explain it. I assume it boils down to my own perception of how I hear it being sung that is preventing me, in a subconscious way, from accepting it as it is. I really don't know. One thing's for sure: It's entirely subjective. You're the one that needs to happy with it. Darin

DarinBad.... no problem... hey, I'm still waiting for them to release the George Strait VST vocal emulation plug in. I certainly don't have that "Nashville" voice that seems to be a requirement for anything country (male) these days... More of a singer songwriter kind of voice if I do say so.... On listening to songs here: I often do the opposite. I start the song and read the comments of others to see what they are hearing and saying and listen for those things to see if I agree or not....and then comment accordingly. But, to each his own, and I just appreciate anyone who listens and then comments.....good or bad. The good is always appreciated but I tend to learn more from the "bad" comments.... that's how you find out what people don't like about the song, mix, performance, etc.... then, knowing that, you can move forward. Ideally, I'd love to find a co-writer with a similar home studio, and, who sounds like the next Garth Brooks. Any takers?

Good heavens, I almost missed this one and that would be a shame. This is a beautiful song --- music and especially lyrics. I am sure that your daughter(s) must appreciate this. I love the mando/guitar lead break. Doggone if you don't sound like Willie! My wife and I have been together for over 40 years, so marriage can indeed work.
