Flying On New Wings-REMIX 2/20 (new snare)

First off, I want to thank all the people here who have taken the time to listen and offer their ears and insights for my songs over the last year or two.  I've learned to count on good advice here, which really helps me because I'm doing this alone, in a basement, and I rarely count on the opinions of family and friends.

I'm putting together a compilation of 12 or 13 songs, and I'm at the point where I'm making my final moves.  Over the course of the next few months, I'll be putting some of these songs up for comments, most of which I've previewed here in the past and remixed due to your various suggestions.  In all cases, my songs have improved for having trusted you.

This song "Flying On New Wings" has been here before, but I have changed a synth sound, and the drums went from Session Drummer to Jamstix.  I rebalanced the vocals, and, hopefully, it all works better now.  This will be the last appearance for this song on this forum, but I'm still open to suggestions, as the project is still open.

It can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com...hi&songID=11648441

And here for those who prefer Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/ly...-4/flying-on-new-wings

I like this Lynn. Vocals sound really strong with a good tone too. Subjective...but I'd probably bring the drums up a bit and maybe add a bit more low end push to the kick. The drums seem to be the lowest in the mix to me...yet EVERYTHING is audible at all times which is a good thing.

Vocals with the back-ups at the same time seem to over-power the mix a bit to my ears, but still...nothing gets totally lost...just a bit less audible.

Last, you're gonna kill me, but I'm still hearing those little click sounds from time to time. I almost wasn't going to say anything but felt I'd not be honest if I didn't mention it.

Love the guitar tone by the way....killer licks and that tone is so warm and creamy. :) Really enjoyed the tune...nice job brother. :)

Cool tune. Is that you on guitar? I thought you were a keyboard guy. I agree with Danny about the drums, but I usally have mine too loud...so what do I know! I really like the song and the over all sound quality. I hope to be up to your level someday.

    Very cool tune... Lynn...
the soulful vocal performances are outstanding...
If I were producing this... I would start by lowering the lead guitar voume, and the vocal volume ... I noticed when the guitar solo came in, its volume stayed the same... that's maybe where it should be for the solo, but bring it down during the vocals, and then you can bring down the vocal a bit too...
I would also spend some time on the guitar tone... but that's a personel pref. thing... just seems a little brittle to me...
When's the album coming out..? I'll buy it...

edit: funny but when I started typimg this there were no other comments...

I do things alone in the basement too... But it's best I not discuss them. You're vibe is always Steve Miller to me :-) I like it, but there's something about the fuzzy guitar in my left ear that feels too mid heavy. I like the percussive feel of the guitars.

    Hey, Lynn,

I remember this cool track from a while ago, and it still sounds really great!

I missed the first mix of this new version, but I think I agree with Danny about possibly beefing up the drums even a little bit more in both low end and volume.

Robby hit it on the head with the Steve Miller comment, this really has a cool, flowing vibe that reminds me of some stuff on the 'Fly Like An Eagle" album, which I really loved when it came out.

Your songs always have cool fusion elements, a strong vintage vibe, and nice modern sounding production work, and to me, that's a great accomplishment, and a mark of excellence.

    Great song, Lynn!

Very nice song! Lovely guitar playing and great tone, however it is only coming on the right channel on the entire song. For the solo parts it would be nice if the guitar is in the middle to bring it up. Hopefully that would make it hotter. Nice singing and mix.

Really interesting concept. Very creative artistic effect. The lead guitar sounded a bit midi/digital to me, especially near the beginning. I agree with the comments about the drums needing more life in the bottom. I think the overall bottom end needs a bit more energy and dynamics. That would take some of the edge of the mids, but I might still dial the mids down a hair. Because the mids are bordering on harsh, I did not get a good sense of the highs quality. I am not sure if you are putting this together as a commercial project, or strictly personal/portfolio. If commercial, I am not prepared to say its ready for that yet.

Lynn, you've already heard from some of the best ears on the forum so far as the mix goes, and I was just listening on my pc speakers, so... I'm just gonna' say that the mix sounded fine to me.  I'll confine my comments to the song and performance, both of which were truly excellent.  The tune moved nicely from start to end and kept my interest the whole way.  Good feel, nice instrumentation, and I for one really liked the guitar tone.  Vocals were exceptional.  Great job.

    Re:Flying On New Wings 2013/02/16 11:40:58 (permalink)
Thank you so much to all who have responded.  There seems to be a consensus that the drums and bottom end needs to come up a bit, and this will be my goal today.  As for comments about the tone of the guitar, I will play with that, too.  I recorded the guitar track several years ago on Sonar 7 through my Line 6 AX2 using a Mesa Boogie emulation which is why it sounds brittle to some people.  At the time, I thought it was cool, but I've changed my mind over the years.

@mstodge- I will put a link on Soundcloud as well as Soundclick.
@vechung- the guitar is only in the right channel to balance with the electric piano in the left channel.  I thought about panning the solos to the center, but that would leave the right channel empty, so that is where my thinking was in regard to that.
@Frank- I will pay attention to the balance of guitar and vocal as you suggested.  This is where extra ears really help me.
@Danny- I will remaster this at a slight lower volume and convert to mp3 at 240 kbs instead of 320.  I suspect that the conversion on Soundclick may have something to do with this because I never had this come up until I started converting at the higher rate.  I would be most appreciative if you could report back to me on this.  I hope that it's not on the 16/44 wave file.
@geeare1- thanks for noticing the time signature!

It's 10:40 am in KC, so give me a few hours, and I'll be back soon with an update.  Thanks again to all my friends that have taken the time to help me.

Thanks for the soundcloud link Lynn.
Very enjoyable song this, well put together and played brilliantly. Is that you on bass too? Love the way that rides through the song.

One small nit from me was the ending. It didn't end where I was expecting, therefore feeling incomplete to me.

Good job on the remix. It sounds much better to Moi. Everything sits better. I was hearing issues with the guitars before, but "everything" sounds better to me... The vocals are excellent. The guitars don't bother me anymore, but don't stick out, and don't sit back either? So read "they are perfect."

It's still a Steve Miller vibe :-) But that's not bad? I like Steve Miller. And you now have an A+ mix, again, good job. I am impressed with people's ability to take their ideas and modify them and improve them.

Clint, thanks for checking back in and replying.  I put a bit of time in on the drums this time.  I should have done that sooner.

Janet, it's always a pleasure to hear from you.  Thanks for the kind words.

Mark, thanks for returning.  That's me on bass; I actually wrote this song on that bass line and built upon it.

Robbie, thanks for taking the time to listen again.  All the suggestions here have really inspired me, and I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate it.  I'm flattered by the Steve Miller comparison.

Rimshot, thank you for you kind words.  Much appreciated.
