Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 issues
Hi, On June 16 2011 we had a severe lightning strike that took out the computer, EMU 0404 USB audio interface and other non-audio items. I decided on the Scarlett 8i6 as a replacement for the obsolete EMU 0404. Although the latest drivers are installed and my device management shows this device working properly I still cannot get this device to work. Anyone else had issues with the Scarlett set-up? Thanks,

UPDATE and warning! More than six months have passed since this issue started- still no results from Focusrite US or UK support and no offers to check the unit for defects. Fair warning! Graeme, Once again I have meticulously followed each and every jot and tiddle of the instructions given with only one exception: [6/. Disable Windows Firewall. This should be set to ‘off’ and all network/internet connections, anti-virus and spyware detection software should be disabled during recording to avoid any interference.] I did not follow step 6 because the 8i6 is supposed to be able to stream audio from my internet browser as stated in the Scarlett litterature: [Loopback Use when recording from one software program to another. Loopback can be used for routing audio from e.g. your internet browser to record into the DAW, or to record from one DAW to another.] Disabling my anti-virus and spyware detection would obviously be a foolish move and should not be required. As I've mentioned before, the former soundcard I was using- E-MU 0404 USB was able to flawlessly perform all of the needed tasks with complete transparency online or off. Today rechecked the complete uninstall, PC optimization, and reinstallation of Scarlett+MixControl-1.1.exe on my system. The correct software and drivers were uninstalled and reinstalled. The audio settings were adjusted accordingly for system and DAW. The system was properly rebooted to reflect changes befor attempting to play audio. Within 18 seconds my Sonar project playback turned to the same noise I have previously described (This project has only four tracks with no installed plugins). Within 37 seconds of playing a song in my Windows Media Player it also changed to undecipherable noise. Within 15 seconds my SiriusXM streaming application turned to noise. There were no other applications in use during any of these occurances. There were no error notifications. Specifically which information can I retrieve for your analysis?

First question is this the PC that was involved in the lightning strike? If you want to use the Focusrite unit as your PC "sound card" then disable the Integrated audio in the BIOS (F2 Setup on a Dell). If both are enabled there can be conflicts. I do a lot of user support on the Dell community (user forum) and we see problems from time to time when two sound devices are enabled at the same time. This may not fix the problem but it's something to consider. The warning about going off line and disabling Antivirus is valid in many cases as there is the potential for on line and/or the antivirus to interfere with recording. This doesn't happen in all cases, just one thing to consider. Many users have their recording PC isolated and it is never placed on line and there is no antivirus installed in that PC.

Walker, It sounds like the sound card drivers are crashing for some reason. A couple of suggestions: Instead of being stubborn and insisting the sound card should perform regardless of the circumstances, you need to apply some analysis and try to find the problem. In the control panel, go into 'sounds and audio devices': turn off windows sounds. In the same menu select 'hardware'; highlight your soundcard in the list, then click 'properties'. In the next menu that appears, select 'properties' again. Click on the plus sign next to 'audio devices', then select your soundcard again, and then click 'properties' one more time; check the box that has 'do not map sounds through this device' next to it; doing so will insure the operating system is not crashing the Focusrite drivers. You should also access the device manager and disable the network adapter, and any onboard sound device other than the Focusrite product. If I were you I would also turn off any active firewall just to be on the safe side. If the sound card functions as it should, try reversing the changes starting with the last change, and test the sound card after each change. The drivers for an Aardvark card I had would crash frequently; the problem stopped when sounds were no longer mapped through it. If not mapping sound through the sound card solves the problem, you will not be able to stream audio through the card.
