Focusrite Scarlett Series Volume Knob Intermittent Cut Out

I found an ebay deal on a Scarlett 18i8 but the volume control needs to be pushed in a tad for both channels to work properly. The left channel is the culprit. I emailed the fellow I bought it from( an ebay store) to see if he minded me looking inside for something obvious, but am awaiting his reply.

I am curious to see if anyone else has experienced this with the Scarletts?

I have a 2i2(and an MXL V67G) on loan to my singer/songwriter/guitar player for his "ideas". I finally have him trained to always use a click, no matter how simple the idea.. Anyways....... The 2i2 has never given me any issues.

Depending on use and environment, oxidation/gunk will build up on pots. Cycling them rapidly will help some since they are a wiper contact internally, but I have become a fan of Deoxit D5 over the past year and it is nice to have around. It is possible that a solder joint has been broken from being dropped (the "pushed in" comment is fairly suspicious). Typically oxidation alone will throw static during cycling that will reduce, but an "on/off" scenario by pushing it in may imply something more.

charlyg ,
Yes I have had a similar problem with my 2i4 ...it drove me absolutely nuts...
my right side kept cutting in and out on my cans ...the screws to the unit  were in tight so I didn't dare strip them ...
What I did do was spray some cleaner and work the pot ...that didn't work then one night I was adjusting my volume and the right side kicked in ..I said eff it and pushed the pot hard ....now it works .....
I'm not cool with having to go there ..this thing has been babied since I bought it new ...good  luck

I emailed the fellow through ebay, and i'm shipping it back tomorrow. As soon as he gets the tracking number, he'll send me a new one! I'm good with that....

Having used the 2i2 for about a year, I'm pretty comfortable with how Focusrite does things. I like my experience, and i think the 18i8 I got was a demo. I wanted to try a Tascam with more inputs, now that CW and Tascam are both under the Gibson umbrella.

I will wait for a little more time to see how the two companies associate with one another, hopefully on a whole other planet than the Roland fiasco.

I received another 18i8 and this one may have an issue as well. there is a small bit of hum on my audio now. Well, it's more like blowing some air out of your mouth while typing or moving the mouse.

I have gotten this with other interfaces, but can't remember if I  fixed it or replaced the I/O...

I know my Line 6 UX2 does not have this issue. I'll unbox my US4x4 that I am selling and see if it is still there.......

I know FocusRite has a pretty good reputation, but I've been thoroughly unimpressed with my 18i20.  The build quality is horrid.  I've had it for less than two years and some of the silver plastic toggle switches for phantom power and the DIM button have completely broken off.  They have not gone through anything but regular use, and weren't forced.  I've taken very good care of the unit, and I've seen others that had the same problem I do.  The plastic knobs and buttons they use simply wear out.  I took the lid off to get rid of some of the plastic pieces that were broken off inside the unit and I was shocked to see the shoddy workmanship on the soldering on the mainboard.  It literally looks like it was put together in someone's garage.

Again, this is only the Scarlett 18i20, which I know is their lower end stuff, and I can't speak for any of the other models, which I know FocusRite has a very good reputation in the industry.  The sound quality is fine and I've never had an issue with the drivers or the unit cutting out, so I give them props there, but because of the shoddy build quality I would never recommend this interface to anyone else.
