Focusrite VRM Box with Sonar X1 & X2 driver problem (solved)

I recently bought a Focusrite VRM Box from B & H foto for $75 inc. shipping. It works great with I-tunes and T-Racks 3 but I can't get it to play nice with either X1 or X2. The asio driver shows up in the list but remains greyed out. I'm using it as a stand alone i.e. no other sound card or S/PDIF. This little unit is cool but would be way cooler if I can get it to work with Sonar. Any suggestions? Thanks.

So the next question would be what version of the drivers are you using, are you using the latest driver. etc.

Try following first 5 steps for M-Audio interface (sure I understand you are using focusrite, pretend you are not :)
    http://www.cakewalk.com/S...m=asio&man=M-Audio

    Otherwise...
Running any other software that could be locking out this driver?
Tried WDM drivers (if you have them?).

Did you check the settings in the VRM's Control Panel?

Also check the Windows 7 mixer.

When you are using the VRM box as the only sound card you need to set the SONAR Audio Bit Depth to '16'. When you are using the VRM box in the S/PIDF of another sound card then you can run SONAR @ '24'. The VRM Box is probably working with itunes because itunes is functioning at '16'.

I got mine from B&H too, great little box. I believe I had trouble getting it to work as a standalone as well, although I didn't try the bit depth setting above. I just went ahead and connected it to my interface via S/PDIF and it works great (although I took me a little while to work out that you're not supposed to have the VRM box selected as input & output drivers in Sonar - just your interface).

You should be able to use the VRM box with Sonar just fine using ASIO drivers at 24 bit without using SPDIF.  I'm playing a session in X2 at 48KHz/24-bit through the VRM box as I'm typing this.

Make sure driver type is set to ASIO and Focusrite USB ASIO Driver is selected on the Devices and Driver settings tabs of the preferences.

If you are still unable to get the VRM box working with Sonar, please use this link to contact Focusrite support:

I can't believe how easy this was to fix. I needed to uncheck my other driver to enable the check box for the VRM.

Make sure your interface sample rate matches the setting in Sonar under Preferences>Audio>Driver Settings.

I am assuming your driver mode is ASIO and all of that - audio interfaces can complain or not work if sample rates do not match between the interface and the host application (Sonar).

Also, sometimes interfaces do not like USB 3.0 ports - might check to see if you are in a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port (3.0 port should have a blue plastic interior).

Thanks Bob.....I did check the sample rates and they do match and I don't have any USB 3.0 ports on this machine. I took some screenshotsfor tech support.

Do you have the new interface set as the default device for your system?  Also, just curious, is there any other audio application running?  Do you have the Share Driver with other programs option checked?

Just trying to think of things for you to try,

On mine via s/pdif I have to set the VRM control panel to 512 buffers for it to work.  I don't know why, I have a frast system, but it's fine since you only use the VRM for playback.

Well, yeah, but 20ms is unusable. You need a better solution.

20ms is irrelevant.  This box does not record or have MIDI.  It is designed for playback/mixing only.  You use your main interface for recording.

What VV said.....Latency isn't really an issue while mixing and mastering without outboard gear. I cranked it all the way up and it works, I can try going lower but for now I'm way happy with it. On a side note this little box is fantastic!!!

It really is a huge help.  I always use use it along with monitors I need to mix in headphones a lot for noise reasons.  Even if I didn't have noise worries I'd still use all the VRM's great assortment of reference speakers/rooms.  If it sounds good on all those it will definitely transfer.

Ordinary hi-fi interconnects will often work, but to be safe pick up a digital cable.
