Foo Fighters First Song Release from "All Analog" Garage Studio
Foo Fighters First Song Release from "All Analog" Garage Studio I thought this was interesting, and that the production quality of the song sounds really amazing, even if your not a fan of the genre. Check it out, and see what you think. Here's the first song released from the new CD: http://soundcloud.com/foofighters/rope And, here's a video tour of Dave Grohl's non-digital, fully analog garage studio **WARNING FOR ROUGH LANGUAGE**: http://www.youtube.com/wa...eature=player_embedded It sort of makes me want to dig my old Fostex reel to reel tape machines back out of the attic. How do they get EVERYTHING to sound completely buried all at once? Is that analog? It sounds like they've totally captured the I'm sitting in my couch watching MTV vibe rather than the I'm bopping hard in a crowd of sweaty rockers at a live show vibe. Is this what people call "girlfriend rock"? It makes me feel like I'm looking at my self in a mirror with my sunglasses on. Thanks for the link. I'll skip the album and wait for the making of documentary. best regards, mike P.S. My wife walked by and said "it sounds eighties" :-)... and she knows a rocker when she hears one!

When the Foo's are on their game, there's no better craftsmen in the field - and this is very much on game. Grohl never ceases to amaze - or amuse - me. I'll take your copy of the disc, Mike......

Here's an example of something that sounds way more alive and rocking than "Rope": http://www.soundclick.com...&q=hi&newref=1 Everything is competing for attention... it's rocking... where as Rope sounds to me like it supposed to sound like listening to Black Sabbath on a set of Auratones. It's not listening to Sabbath on Auratones... it just sounds like it's supposed to sound like it's listening to Sabbath on Auratones. It seems to me to be mixed for people who grew up listening to "heavy" rock on MTV through a Sound Design receiver and some mystery meat speakers in a wall to wall carperted living room. It doesn't sound alive, edgy, awake, or happening... it sound's like music you'd blare in your Nissan while taking your girl friend to Macdonalds on a date. Bob's Bullet Proof heart (and most of his stuff) sound's ****in!!! I think there is a noticeable difference. best regards, mike

Sound quality and methods are sure subjective and stating opinions of what are the best is sure enough fishing for a debate that I don't care to part of. I'll say that I sure enjoyed the listen to that cut....again. (although I've heard it before and seen the video) Oh....argue all we want...I'd still listen to Captain Beyond for heavy and sound value and would recommend it to them too ....while dancing madly backwards... ...carefully so the LP doesn't skip. Having this digital communication and stuff like "soundcloud" is what really impresses me.....we can't go back to analog for that. Question Bob; Why do you think they wanted to do the analog trip? Do you think they intended for a complete analog trip....meaning they really wanted the media to be virgin vinyl 180 gram? They figured if they recorded analog that everybody would think it was something like; being able to play and record with minimum edit's or looping? Or just simply they just wanted to do it that way? Because digital just ain't working for recording? I know I don't know why but I would thing that being able to achieve a digital recording that without doubt surpassed the quality of analog would be a much better goal and accomplishment. IMO.

I think they probably did it in the garage and guest house of the mini mansion for the tax write off... plus it left their investment grade studio over the hill and just down the road open for lock out by an up and coming band that is spending their whole advance getting sounds to die for. I think they went all analog simply because they can afford to... by today's standards... it the most expensive way to go. Captain Beyond!!! best regards, mike

Well, you can put me in the Grohl camp as well. I've been a fan for quite some time. Whether it "rocks" or not (it does) his production chops are just dangtastic IMHO. Plus, he's always pushing himself and those he works with to experiment. I don't see how anyone who has seen the Foos live could come away thinking they aren't one of the best rock acts ever . Rock on, Dave. Rock on.

Just went and listened to this again (for about the fourth or fifth time). You need new speakers or headphones Mike, ol pal. I'm amazed at the detail that Dave was able to coax out of a totally analog signal path. I guess it's also why I like guys like Chuck Loeb. Totally different genre and style but the same amazing detail when mixing natural aural material that fights you all the way and makes you "do it perfect...or better" to get it souding right.

Had the pleasure of seeing them live once. Tremendous show.

Yes I have to agree with yorolpal I am wondering what Mike is listening to this stuff on and what may jammed in his ears as well. I think the Foo Fighters track sounds fantastic and it is kickin this end for sure. I also agree with Mike in that Bob's track is also kickin but in a different sort of way. It is a bit more digital sounding but Bob I think if you can get that good a sound digitally then you are well on the way to getting that Foo Fighters analog sound as well with a bit of perseverance. You just need some nice fat sounding analog plugins and you will be in the ballpark too.

So which is it? Is it difficult to coax detail out of a 3/4 million dollar all analog signal path? Or is it impossible to get a nice sound out of a $40k PTHD digital rig? And since when does how something was produced become part of the marketing speil? There's still a lot of great music being put out that is simply there to like or not like... and no one seems to have to make F-Bomb videos trying to pre dispose you to thinking it sounds like what you will become pre disposed to think it is. Maybe I need some concrete plant stands. :-)

I thought the recording sounded pretty good for a 128 mp3. ;)

Well, I think what's pretty impressive is that Dave and Taylor and the fellers have been able to acheive the same (or better?) detail, focus and overall clarity of sound using an all analog chain instead of a digital one. This speaks as much to their musicianship as their production chops. While I'm a fan of Dave (and the Foos) I've never been gobsmacked by their digital efforts...but only because I know firsthand how things can be manipulated and corrected and tweaked in the digital realm. Don't misunderstand...I generally love their production/mixing techniques (and their songs!!) and think they are head and shoulders above others in their respective genres. However...as I also know through years of experience, trial and error and (mostly) failure...just how hard it is to produce that level of "detail" in an analog recording, I AM gobsmacked by this effort. Again, it is more about their level of musicianship than their production. This level of detail using an all analog chain is very hard to achieve. Whether it is an almost perfect Sinatra cut...the work of Sir George Martin...whatever...to work within the limitations of the analog environment and to produce this level of detail...and especially with aural elements (distorted and jangle guitars, stacked heavily, multi layered vocals, and driving cymbal laden drum kits) that are problematic at best when trying to record cleanly and place properly in a cohesive mix setting...and to still ROCK YOUR ASS OFF...is an amazing achievment. Just my two cents. PS: As to whether Dave drops an occasional "f-bomb" I couldn't care f*#$ing less;-)
