For Remembrance Day.

ORIGINAL: mgh

I think you should repost 'My Brave Boy' as it's Remembrance weekend!!! My favourite of yours!

No sooner said than done Mark! Thanks for that.

MY BRAVE BOY

For those that didn't catch this the 1st (or 2nd..) time around, this features Bill Davies (Tonecarver) on all manner of keyboard wizardry, Tim on vocals and me on guitars.

A small tribute to those that fell, in any conflict.

A tribute indeed and what pleasure that was to hear. What rich full sound and the stories you tell in your tunes. That was truly a beautiful performed song.

    Jamesg123,

Very moving song, and good performances as well. I listened to this a couple of times and was thinking about how the vocals are sitting in the mix. They appeared to be sitting up a little high in the mix, and may benefit from some slight space, and pushed ever so gently back a bit. Keep in mind that this is purley subjective, and should not take away at all from what I think is a good recording / song. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent James and very fitting as we in the states celebrate Veteran's Day this coming Tuesday. A very sad & moving song along with great performances by all involved! A tribute indeed to the fallen...

James - I enjoyed this - thanks for posting. In DC, visiting the Vietnam Memorial for me is a moving experience - all the names of the veterans that perished in that conflict are listed there.

Thanks Kev. Tim has a way of putting these stories into lyrics that amazes me.

Hi Keith, thanks, glad you liked it. This mix is probably due a remix but I'm not sure I have it in me at the moment!

Thanks Steve, it was Mark's idea, and kind of him to suggest it.

Larry, thanks pal. It's always a time of reflection for me, my grandfather fought in WW1 and came home a very changed man.

Frank - I'm glad it moved you, hope it didn't spoil your day though.

Hello Doug - thanks, it's good to take the time and remember eh?

Really touching song man. I have heard this a few times from back in the day. It's amazing, when I hear a song this good even for the 15th time it feels like the first. War is such a horrible thing for anyone to go through. It is just unconceivable to me. Beautiful song.

Thanks James. A great haunting song that always gives me shivers down my spine when I hear it. Dunno if you've seen any of the TV programmes here where people seek out the stories of their family members who fought in WWI, but some moving stuff on that too. The numbers of men who died on all sides in the trenches in Belgium and France is just...incomprehensible.

I've watched a few of them this week Mark - did you see the one with Dan Snow?

For those who missed it, his great-grandfather was one of the top brass sitting safe miles behind the front - the stroke of a pen by him could (and did) condemn vast numbers of his own men to a horrible and senseless death.

Snow was obviously very distressed at discovering this, as was clear to see from his reaction.

It reminded me so much of Stephen Fry's 'General Melchitt' character from Blackadder - although the show was intended to be (and was) funny, I was reminded that it's often mentioned how great comedy is based on real 'situations', and to me this was just such an example.

Thanks Ed. I think Tim hit the mark square on with this song, touching without being mawkish.

Jon - absolutely. Amen to that.

Mark - thanks for the idea.

The numbers of men who died on all sides in the trenches in Belgium and France is just...incomprehensible.

Indeed. The Battle of The Somme is probably the worst, maybe ever. The British army alone suffered 57,000 casualties in the first day of that engagement, something like 20,000 in the first hour.

    Incomprehensible is the word alright.

One of the 4 remaining British soldiers who fought in WW1, Syd Lucas, died this week. he was 108 years old. RIP Syd.

Great tune James. I listened to this a couple of times earlier with morning mug.

The music sure reminded me of what Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple) has been doing. "Castle's & Dreams"-DVD is a great listen. (he has a very beautiful wife that sings)

    Yo James,

I guess I'm a sucker for subject matter in a song, and this song has breath-taking depth. The execution is suberb and well up to the challenge. Tim sings like an angel.

It sounds like a classic. Enough said.

    Cheers,

    Bert

I think this is a fabulous piece. Very beautiful and sorrowful.

There were some moments in the beginning where Tim's vocals stumbled a few times tonally. Will you be revisiting some parts of this?

    Cheers

James, you know my thoughts on this one. It's always good to hear.
I'll never forget the afternoon in Verdun with my grandfather in '69. Looking over row upon row of white crosses, with him telling the story of what happened there. Eirily silent now. And the poppies.. yes, the poppies.

Thanks Shad. I don't think we'll be returning to this song for a good while. We tried 2 other versions before this one, and I think if it re-surfaces it'll be a completely new arrangement.

Bob - you've been a great champion of this song ever since Tim wrote it, and we're very grateful for that.
