For Those of Us Remaining Behind with Sonar X3e
Basemente' musician here. Love my X3e and the various VSTs that came with it, not to mention the whole host of other external goodies that I've plugged in the software along the way. Works great. Love it. New stuff in Platinum etc sounds great, but is not enough for me to bite....just how much better can this software get?! My question: Will CW continue to add new Sonar X3e compatible VSTs, presets, etc., and make them avail for purchase (X3e compatible)? I realize the Platinum tier plan folks get for free, etc. Are X3e peeps officially on the outside now? Just curious in a nonchalant X3e sorta way. ;) Thanks, Jim BTW: I just did a thing: https://soundcloud.com/scenic-mental-detours/why-am-i-heretoot.

For all practicable purposes X3 is dead. You will still be able to use it all you want but its update life is over. As a rule CW never sells plugins that it bundles with a new version for use in an older version. Pro Channel modules are different and if they come up new ones they may be for sale. If you think of Sonar Platinum as X3 on steroids you may want to look into getting it to stay current and get a really great DAW too.

John I would say X3 "development" is dead. Hence no further updates, fixes or added features. X3 is alive on all installed computers.

VST2 and VST3 plugins from other vendors will work with X3e, and X3e will of course continue to run. Cakewalk has simply moved on to the new release of Platinum, and the new sales model. Bob Bone

I presume any new ProChannel modules will work in X3e Producer and Studio (as John mentions). And presets for anything you already own.

Well...talk about being behind..:o)..technically and softwareically ...:o) And I know there are a few who are further behind than I am. It's quite possible, though, that these tools last as long as I do.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

I'll probably keep an eye for new program soundbank releases of DimPro , etc, or maybe even ProChannel preset this and that. At this point I can't even imagine how much they can move beyond what's already delivered. New compressors, effects bin things, etc. Got it. Most of that stuff is presently in place already. I always get a bit concerned when I go chasing new toys (and leaving behind the infinity of music creation). Really like the new feature of saved mix configurations, but I rarely go that far, and can work around that with saved versions. Sluggish, but works.

They've apparently fixed a lot of bugs in X3. " The latest version of SONAR has hundreds of bug fixes, many reported directly by users (and a big “thank you” to those who provided bug details and ways to reproduce). Here’s a partial list of the most significant and/or common ones that were fixed." Makes you wonder a bit about a product that has hundreds of bugs, but at least they're recognized and being addressed. But it'll cost you the price of X3 to get them fixed.

'Knock on wood' Five years from now are the Sonar X3 users still awaiting an X4? Then Platinum 2015 will be advanced to Platinum 2020; and be worried not about keep using your old but trusted Sonar X3e....... To be honest, for most people it appears, Sonar 2015 do not appear to be a crippling. So getting involved in the evolution of the software may not be a bad thing.

I used Producer 8.5.3 for 4 years before upgrading and I was extremely happy with it. I haven't had a chance to really get to grips with Platinum yet but if for some reason I had to go back to 8.5.3 I could easily do so. If your system is stable and you have no issues then there is no need to upgrade. The bug fixes may not effect your work flow, and if you can live without extra addictive drums, vocal align, mix recall etc. then I agree with you, just get on with making music. I believe there comes a time when one reaches a software overload point, where you spend more time exploring/figuring out/tweaking new features then actually making music! At least this has been my experience. I would suggest you wait until Cake offers a must have feature that you absolutely need before you jump in. Cheers, Paul

That *may* be a bad presumption. Cake, at any time, could enable a new PC module for only greater than X3 (i.e. SINAR 2015). Example, ReMatrix Solo is a PC Module that I cannot use in X3. Granted, it's 3rd Party but it's PC none the less.

Yeah, but some of them are "corrected spelling of Anterton in Anderton collection" and "documentation for crossfades repeated twice in Japanese language manual." This isn't to minimize that serious bugs crop up that need to get fixed, but the remaining bugs are getting increasingly esoteric, and often have conditionals like "does not display properly sometimes if opened in safe mode from desktop." Those are the hardest ones not only to quantify, but to even have show up because it's not how people usually open files. But as you point out, at least once they're recognized, they can be fixed.

I find the incremental ergonomics and ease of use w/ each new iteration of SONAR real timesavers. Much of what was frustrating in the earlier versions of X has smoothed out. It was like they had a plan or something. ;-) Whether that is worth it to you is another matter.
https://soundcloud.com/a-pleasure-dome http://www.bnoir-film.com/ there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

I was stuck on 8.5.3 for about the same time period. I love it. Especially the color features. BUT when I made the switch to X3e and now to Platinum, I can say that the audio engine and other improvements are worth upgrading from 8.5.3. And improved latency performance has value. tonemangler I used Producer 8.5.3 for 4 years before upgrading and I was extremely happy with it. Actually, according to what I've read, there is nothing after Platinum. It's the name of the CW's flagship DAW's ultimate version of SONAR. IOW there will be no future naming like the past (.....8.5.3, X1, X2, X3).

This made me laugh because in 2007 after driving Ford Tauruses for 15 years, Ford took the 500 and slapped a disgustingly ugly grill on it. This stuck out so much that I told the guy, "I realize this is only a $20 piece of plastic that I could easily replace, but it is the first impression anyone will have." There are reasons people have careers in "just" branding.

I don't know whether the actual engine itself has been tweaked, or if the incremental improvements to other parts of the core program have had an effect, but the whole experience just seems a whole lot smoother, stable and so far, glitch free.

I used Pro Audio 9 until I could upgrade to Sonar 5 and get Sonar 6 as a free upgrade.
I upgraded every version since.
I can say the best upgrade to Sonar has been the X series. I saw what PA9 was, and then Sonar 8 Expanded really showed marked improvement.
But when the X series came out, I saw that CW was shedding the old in favor of the new.
I said it when Sonar Platinum came out, the Bakers have some plans. Their visions of four to five years ago are coming together.
Stay with X3e. But you will be missing out! I'm just saying.
