I like Dava but have been using Snarling Dog Brain Picks for the last 2 or 3 years.  I use a variety of thicknesses.  My local shop carries onesies ... I originally tried them because even Dava picks tend to spin.  Theses are prickly on the grip and don't slip at all even with a light grasp.  Once I tried them, I like the material, flex, feel too.  Now my pick of choice

This is what I use for guitar too, and they (mostly) solved my pick-dropping issues.

They come in a variety of gauges and I bought a tin of each:
.53mm Green
.60mm Purple
.73mm Red
.88mm Black
1.0mm Grey
1.14mm Orange

I mostly use the Orange and Grey on electric and the Red and Green on acoustic, depending on the specific guitar and what I'm looking for.

On bass when I'm not using my fingers I use white Fender Extra Heavy. And it's very important to me that they're the white ones, so I had to buy a gross of them as unfortunately that's the only way you can get that specific combination nowadays.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Hi, Steve. Top one.

The bottom though is a good example of the "super sharp point" I was referring to that I dislike that some of the Tortex triangles come with. Never liked them on the standard shaped picks either.

And yeah... my pizza geometry may be a little off but that's just what I've always called them. lulz...

Cheers.

Cool, thanks Beep.

Just ordered a variety pack of six to try out.

Yngwie Malmsteen uses really sharp picks but he seems to only use them for some minutes. i wonder if they dont last longer for that type of playing. like if your used to sharp ones you have to get new ones regularly compared to more rounded.

Ah I see. Cool. They take a bit of getting used to but I really do think they're the shiz.

As far as Tortex as a pick material, if you've never used it I think you're gonna really like it considering the styles you're into. Lasts longer, nice flex action without being "floppy" (and don't get floppier when they heat up which I find other picks sometimes do) and they wear down nice and smooth like the strings are sandpapering them instead of taking out grooves and gauges like other materials.

In a lot of ways I think they really changed my playing style for the better because I don't have worry about my pick exploding or busting strings when I play harder.

Cheers.

Yeah the points on those wear down real quick and in kind of a weird way. For his ultra insane single note picking I could definitely see them being useful. They suck for chords, chugging or trying to play with a lot of feeling/dynamics though... in my experience anyway.

I think a lot of jazz guys use those super pointy ones too.

Just watched a YouTube clip by a very good guitarist discussing picks. He had been using RedBear but found them wearing too fast. He tried out several but ended up with his two favorites...JB and Blue Chip. He really liked the Blue Chip better...only trouble was the JB cost $8 bucks...the Blue Chip, $75. Whoa.

When playing live, I'll always use a standard shape pick 1mm (.88 in a pinch) or thicker. I'm not picky about the material, but I do prefer plastic over nylon. This is for both electrics and acoustics.

Studio... that's different - I experiment to get the tone/attack I am looking for on a particular song. This is particularly important (for me) on acoustic parts - especially if the percussive sound of the pick is going to be part of the sound. This might sound tedious, but I really don't spend much time on it... More often than not I grab the size I want before I start playing... I certainly have it chosen within one pass of the song.

I  use the Dunlop tortex .50mm picks for acoustic guitar. I like thin for acoustic guitar, although at least half the time it winds up in my mouth while I play fingerstyle. I have taken the .50mm and bent the tip a couple of hundred times to weaken it for playing fast mandolin types of things.
My favorite acoustic pick was one I got for free at the Styx concert. They were giving them out. I have no idea what it is though.

For electric guitar I use a really hard pick with a pointy end...sorry I don't know what it's called :)

40 to 25 years ago Fender medium.

Then Dunlop 1mm small stubby because I needed speed on single string melody work (think Dick Dale) and because they let me have skin/string contact which allows for a lot of note shaping. Then I discovered that a small pick makes hybrid picking much easier.

Nowadays Dunlop Delrin Jazz shape, the stiffer purple version of the pick.

Though mostly I don't use a pick at all, especially for playing blues/"old style" British R'n'B. Mix of clawhammer-ish mixed with banjo frailing using the back of my nails. I never use a pick when playing slide except on lap steel when it's plastick thumbick plus three steel fingerpicks.

Acoustic guitar = Dunlop thumbpick, usually in open tuning or DADGAD.

On bass standard size Dunlop nylon, 1.2mm thick. Or thumb and first finger slapping.

I just wish manufacturers offered all their picks in white. Even better glow-in-the-dark white. The number of picks I've dropped on dark stages or pub carpets, never to be seen again, is ridiculous.

Man, I went and looked because I remembered the "pizza slice" pick. Just a warped orange piece of plastic now with no writing whatsoever on it - had to look it up to realize it was "originally" .60mm (probably under .5 now), so I guess I got use out of that one. Never realized all the crap I collect until I opened that box.

I found an antique thumbpick that looks like the end of a spoon rolled into a donut (with the engraving you would see on a spoon handle). Thick as a dime and pretty much unusable, but looked strange enough to keep. It might have been a "legitimate" thumbpick, but no clue of its origins.

I find the talk of 70mm picks...unlikely? :-)

Thanks for the heads-up on the Dava picks, I ordered a selection of them to try out.

I've never got on with tortex (dislike the material) or nylon (too floppy) picks myself.

I recently got a few different picks from PickBoy, the 'pos-a-grip' ones are very stable.  I also like delrin picks and have been moving more and more towards thicker sizes (1.5mm).  Can be a bit slippery, but a Monster grip dot on the thumb side solves that problem.

I think the oddest pick I bought recently was a ceramic PickBoy one.

I still have no idea how people grip 70mm plectrums :-D :-?

Anyway, my current search for TOTP (in lieu of the PoD) continues...throwing up some more likely candidates (listed below) to join the growing throng in my 'Jar of Various Plectrums'.  Which is a small glass jar I got for a £1 from Tesco.  That has various plectrums in it.  Perhaps the name gave that away?

Anyhoo:
