For once, a drummer I'd hire...
Vinny Appice, who's one of my favorite rock/metal drummer is coming to GC in Vegas - and I'm missing the event because we're out of town that exact day. He and Carmine were playing BB's place in NY while we were there - and I missed them every time I thought I could go. I'm not educated when it comes to drums. I don't have the resources to enjoy subtle stuff. Ian Paice is probably the most subtle drummer I can enjoy. John Bonham is God of all things you can hit with sticks. Appice is one of the few others I really dig. I'm off to listen to Mob Rules and Holy Diver again...

I got to see him in '97 with Dio on the Angry Machines tour. Awesome... My favorite drummer (living, at least).

I love his work w/ Dio. Unfortunately, I never got to see any of those tours. I'm usually not a big fan of tributes, but I'm crossing my fingers that Last in Line will play Vegas. This would be 2 for 1 actually, as Vivian Campbell was one of my favorite guitar players when I was a kid.

Who is in that band? I met Vivian at a Kramer clinic in '87. He was playing the next night at Notre Dame with Whitesnake. Got to shake his hand and he signed my guitar strap. I remember he kept wanting to talk about the guitar, and we all kept calling out for him to play solos off of Dio songs. I remember he played the holy diver solo. Good concert the next night too. Somebody jumped onstage and punched David Coverdale in the face. But I'm getting off topic. So who's in this tribute band? If I read your post right, Vivian is? If so, that's surprising considering all the bad blood between him and Dio.

I was surprised as well, but I've read a couple of interview where both of them seemed to come to term with it. Last in Line is the original band (Vivian, Jimmy Bain, Vinny Appice, Claude Schnell) w/ Andrew Freeman (Lynch Mob) on vocals.

Wow. That would be something to see. I feel bad for Andrew though. It's pretty much impossible to fill Dio's shoes. It would be cool if they would write some new material. I would buy it in a second.

Hey Rain, I just checked out a few songs from their gig at the Slidebar in CA on 8/3. Wow... Viv's playing like he's 20 years old again. Vinnie, Jimmy and Claude sound tight as can be. What a band... Andy sounds great too. Not to sound stupid but I had tears in my eyes listening to the solo in "Don't Talk To Strangers". They are so tight together. Too bad the sound quality of the video sounded so bad but the chemistry still came through. I didn't know Vivian had cancer. Sounds like he caught it early so hopefully he'll be fine. But man, thank you for telling me about them getting back together.

Glad you appreciate it! :) I've been rediscovering a lot of those old records recently - there's nothing like 80s metal in the gym. I'd forgotten how much I liked Vivian's playing. And from what I've read on Facebook, he really put his heart into the reunion project.

I'm familiar with his older brothers work. One of the best works ever recorded IMO.

Hi, The two drummers I like to listen to the best are the late Pierre Moerlin (make sure you get "You" from Gong, or "Exposed" with Mike Oldfield) ... or Steve Gadd. If you don't know Steve Gadd, just get kate Bush's "50 Words for Snow" ... to find out what ... "no drumming" is all about!

+1 for Steve Gadd. I recently watched an Eric Clapton video "Session One" from his Robert Johnson project featuring Gadd - who has snare control and a corresponding sound to die for ! Cheers, Jerry

I also love listening to his work with Rickie Lee Jones on her first albums ... she has never sound half as good as she did then, and I think that much of it had to do with Steve's accents on the emotional thing of hers, instead of a "song" format, or drum pattern. The opening of all 4 albums up to Magazine, are excellent ... totally well done and recorded, and only someone that LISTENS to the lyrics, and KNOWS what they mean, can do that!

"and only someone that LISTENS to the lyrics, and KNOWS what they mean, can do that!" Or who does what the songwriter says to do.

This tempted me into listening to this fine album (been a while) which then reminded me of just how damn loud current recordings have gotten. I haven't had to turn up my speaker volume to listen to anything in a long time! (Hope I remember to turn it back down before playing something more current and squished - lol!)

Depends ... sometimes there are things that the writer/singer can not see or know, and if they are open to it, they will let folks do their thing ... many times, others are better musicians and they have a feel that ... helps you ... why would you not accept it? But yeah ... if the songwriter is god and he insists on you being a subpar musician ... go ahead ... be my guest!

FWIW, Last in Line will be performing San Diego on October 12th. As much as I like San Diego and would love to see Campbell and the guys live, unfortunately, Saturday is a no go for us. http://www.ramonamainstage.com/last-in-line/

Have you seen any of the footage from the gigs last month? You can tell the guys are enjoying it.

While not too close to San Diego itself, Ramona is where all my remaining relatives are down in So. Cal. In fact, I bet my third-cousins could walk to that venue from their house - I'll have to ask if they go there.
