Hey never mind the catch Ron, whats the deal? Is it worth a trip over? I took my two sons on a "road trip" in a hired Cherokee Jeep in 2002, and Denny's were our favourite stop offs, so much so we used to drive round looking out for them, they seem to be everywhere in Florida. Mind you, once I took them into Hooters my then 15 year old seemed to prefer their menu for some reason.....

mike how is the tip worked out there? I mean you have a certain % service charge but it differs a lot from country to country.

15% is supposed to be "customary"

I don't believe, however that it's typically followed by most. probably closer to 10% for those who DO tip and much lower if you average those who do not.

I'm a 20-22% weakling... but I'm also the guy that doesn't spend a bunch on the high profit extras like appetizers or sodas etc so it's still cheap enough for me to be a good sport about what I do order and the seat that I take up. :-)

They love me at the Waffle House! I even know Bert! :-)

This is a special they annouced during the superbowl. Free grand slam breakfast from 6am to 2pm. I went with my son Max. There was a line out the door at 9:30am. We were about 20 people back from the door when we got in line, but the line was moving pretty quick. We had our seats in about 15-20 minutes. Since breakfast was free I left a big tip. Although, it seems a lot of people in there were taking total advantage of the situation! We ordered, ate, and left...looked like a lot of people were loitering, and is pretty inconsiderate, considering the line to get in was outside the resteraunt!

They are a massive chain of roadside diners, not just on highways but main roads in most towns too. They sell the lot, burgers, breakfasts, alcohol. What I liked about them and a lot of diners in the USA is the free coffee on tap from the moment you walk in. The waitresses were always friendly and hard working and I made sure I tipped well, they deserve it. Soooooo.. no, a lot better than Spud-U-Like or Wimpy

Here's the thing about Denny's... I drag colleagues there because I need a veggie burger on the road... and they make one.

Most of my acquaintances react by saying something like "Denny's? Ok I guess that's ok, I don't go to Denny's much"... then they eat their hamburger and say something like "wow that was a really good fast food burger".

Plus you can get a grand slam breakfast 24/7... and they do tend yo have good people working at their locations.

    best,
    mike

regarding what Mike just commented about regarding most people's reaction to Denny's; Denny's has a reputation for bad customer service. This reputation came mainly from the 90's because of lawsuits against them for refusing to serve to racial minorities - mainly African American.

Beagle, was that isolated or localized cases or at the corporate level? Sincerely curious... I guess I'd heard that and assumed it was very specific to an errant store manager... the thought that it might be widespread makes me uneasy.

I've had two bad Denny's experiences... New Mexico, and South Carolina but that's out of a hundred + visits to dozens of locations.

    best regards,
    mike

there were actually 4 separate lawsuits naming specific instances in San Jose, CA, Syracuse, NY, Annapolis, MD, and one not named,

but the big one was a class action suit was settled in 1994 filed by "thousands of black customers who had been refused service, forced to wait longer, or pay more than white customers." the settlement of $54.4 million caused Denny's corp to "retrain" all employees for "racial sensitivity."

little chef.. only ever been there once.. total rip off , that was hhmm must be 6 years ago now.. no wonder they weren't doing so well , £18 or something for 2 fry ups and a pot of coffee.

I guess your paying more for the convenience , but still a rip off.

we only see such places in tv / films though.. and it's normally in the middle of some highway where there is nothing around for 50 miles.hehe

the one that made me laugh though, was drive-in bottle shops.
