For those of us who don't pay attention: X3 pre-purchase tip.

Here's a reminder that the Nomad Plugins are licensed only for Cakewalk X3 and later versions.  So don't expect to use them in other DAW software or even earlier versions of SONAR like X2.

I didn't catch that until now.  I'll learn to look for the details a little better next time.

Given that I already own the entire suite of Nomad plugs (and did not install CWs version) I'm golden.

I wonder if the Pro Channel tape sim is licensed only to X3, I haven't tried loading it into X2 yet?

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Well that's a bit disappointing.  I've been sitting out upgrades since 8.5 -- X3 (X1 and 2 had all too many reported issues) caught my attention and I am considering - but this will certainly factor in.

Thanks Dave for the heads up!

Nope.  It's licensed for X3 and above as well.

As for the Nomad bundle, I'm curious how much did that costs by buying it separately from X3 ??

I have no regrets.

you've had nothing but negative posts this weekend hu  dave ?
I mean sure, everyone is entitled to their opinions but your just looking for the negative.

like yesterday when Panu started a thread about a crash in x3.
what did you say ?  o ya,  "we have a winner folks"

like you had been waiting around all day for a crash to happen so you could pop open a bottle of champagne and celebrate a cakewalk failure.

you used to be helpful around here, specially to Toontrack users.
now you sound more resentful more then anything else.

Surely it was obvious, even to a casual observer, that we could not expect all those Nomad plugs, plus Melodyne, and Addictive Drums etc. for the price of an upgrade?

Even buying Sonar Producer for the first time would cost less than buying all that, with the DAW thrown in for free.

As soon s I read the leaked info about X3 it was obvious that they had to be locked into Sonar, otherwise how could Cake, or their partner do it?

I almost exclusively use Sonar, although I have a couple of other DAWS, so am very happy with the deal.

I still have X1 on my machine and will continue to do so until it's time to reinstall from scratch (which is less likely based on my imaging scheme).

I never even thought about that Dave. I guess it's no big deal for me, as I have never gone back to an older version of Sonar and the only other DAW I've used in recent years is Harrison's Mixbus. And that was just to get that tape sound.

Depending on how X3 sounds with the tape sim, I may not be using anything but X3 and the other 64 bit plugs I've purchased recently.

I'm sorry you feel disappointed, Dave, but surely we have not reached our venerable age without a little common sense?

Cakewalk have released this update with "extras" that are worth more than the product.  It is a great deal for people who use Sonar.  If someone were trying to get a lot of third party software at a knock down price, with a DAW thrown in for free, then surely that is asking too much?

I think this upgrade was well worth the money.

Using several daws and cherry picking their goodies is great for any of us when it happens. But it's rare. So no, based on several efx offerings from cake that goes back through the years, they protect their investments, as they should. That essentially allows the sonar users to participate and enjoy group buys so to speak.

I've used several really good daws over the years, but from my perspective X3 is the daw to own right now. Smoking...

Compared to the people who seem to contribute NOTHING except repeating the same negative comments, Mod is far from the extreme on the negative scale.  He has voiced some concerns and frustrations but he at leas t seems like he wants X3 to succeed.  There are several people who post  who don't own Sonar and have not owned any version in a long time who just come to troll.  Mod at least bothered to buy the product.

It's rare when I expect licensed plugins to work outisde of the program i bought them with.  I doubt there is much Cakewalk could do about that since that directive likely came from the third party and helped reduce the licensing fee.  i do think it would be nice if they could offer a fee to unlock these programs from Sonar.

I did not see that.  However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Softube bundles sold by Cake in X2 work just fine elsewhere, as does Breverb.  I have thousands of dollars worth of plug ins.  (yes, thousands.) All of the Slate stuff,  26 UAD2 plugs,  Ozone 5 Advanced, Alloy, Nectar, a few Waves, Lexicon PCM bundle, Virtually all of the Voxengo stuff, Many softube plugs including Grand Channel and the Cake bundle, Kush audio, Superior drummer, Toontrack EZ Keys, Melodyne Studio Bundle,  Valhalla, not to mention a bunch of Pro Tools only stuff.  I don't think that there is any plug in that CW could offer that would make much difference to me from a buying perspective.

Since I use multiple DAWs, I have learned to pay attention to what works where.  All of my Voxengo plug ins are obsolete with regards to Pro Tools 11. They still work fine in any DAW that uses VST. So, if I really need to use something, I can figure it out.

BTW, hardware is not obsolete! I use some of my rack stuff once in a great while

Still watching that cursor spinning while trying to download X3..... drat!

Oh, at the person who called out Mod-Bod. Seriously? He is one of the forums most valuable assets. I think his point is valid even if you find fault with it.   YMMV

Wow, $399 worth of plug-ins included in the $149 upgrade price... what a deal !!! I think they sound and work pretty good too !!

but that's not the case.. as when I buy the $399 version I can also use them in whatever other DAW I use also ?

"the value of".. means nothing.. they do it to extremes on some shopping channels.. "yes it's worth "in our eyes" $8000... but you can have it today for $30...

I dislike that aspect of all companies that do (a lot of daw makers) it as I'm paying for "something" if it's locked to their DAW they should be forced to say so.. as are these promo videos either "ACME SUPER PLUGIN".. yet you always notice they try to be rather quiet with mention it's the LE or SE version. (from years of buying things I expect it, but you are new to it , you add 1+1 and get 7)
. Since the plugins are either VST2 or 3 format, that's not the issue.. it's just checking a DAW identified. so "yep" I am paying for the daw.. but I'm paying for a subsidized version of something else.

I posted about locked plugins hhmm easily 2-3 years ago.. the cake "home baked" ones weren't locked , but the licensed things did check the daw host (to which I'd have rather an LE version that wasn't locked) . Even when they did work , RXP doesn't draw onscreen correctly in cubase for example.

Steve did point out the thing with some of who have got GAS , regarding plugins (me included).. so the ones bundled.. in some cases I would use other things.. the tape sim.. not like I can demo to compare it against other things. that makes what is going on with the core program , more important to some of us.

Well to save $250 bucks on plug-ins there's a trade off. You have to use them in X3. I'm okay with that, as X3 is the only DAW that I plan on using. So what's my alternative, buy them separately at $89 bucks a shot ?? I don't want to play that game. I could end up spending $1,000's of dollars on plug-ins alone ?? No thanks !!

uhhm, no. Not for one moment do I think that the baker dudes consider Sonar to be the only software anyone would ever need for music production.  Do you have customers? The only reason I have multiple DAWs  and tons of plug ins, is for that simple fact. I absolutely prefer to work in Sonar, but I got to tell you... when you have paying clients you use what they request.  I love sonar work flow but I can not think of a single project that I used just their bundled plug ins.  Real world  folks...

look at it this way.. if you decide to change, for some reason (no pun intended).. that's stuff you can't bring across... much like control surfaces also.

I will ALWAYS search for a more generic one that isn't locked into something. so to a degree I expect it.. BUT if it's to a degree where that's offered as a higher percentage of the cost vs the DAW or upgrade.. it sorta amplifies what you expect of the DAW itself.. hopefully that makes sense.

I do get what Dave is going on about, but due to him probably mainly using sonar for a long time.. only now he's aware of such things.. and yep other companies do the same thing.. as it's a subsided version.

My real world experiences told me that the clients don't tell me what software to use, but rather would rather concern themselves with the end product. .....unless you're locked into the PT syndrome for clients.  And no...I wouldn't buy Sonar because of their bundled plugins either...but rather for Sonar first.
Show me a Cakewalk Demo the suggests using outside software.   Why do you think the incorporate 3rd party stuff?  I happen to think Cakewalk believes their software is enough for music production, excluding soft synths, etc.  I don't think they give a flip if you have a zillion $$ invested in plugs, but I don't believe they think it's needed for quality end product.

So... if a studio client tells you they want Antares mic modeler, you feel obligated to provide?

Ya know, I don't really argue with folks.  I have never had someone tell me that they would like me to use Antares mic modeler instead of my Neumans, AT, AKG, or whatever my current flavor is. I do have them request PT though. I have it. I find it klutzy to work in but I will track in it for them.  Not exactly sure what you mean by "locked in to PT syndrome". This is not a PT/VS Sonar thread.  I find those pretty stupid.  They are just different tools. (and yes,PT has a stranglehold in the pro audio segment in the Houston area at least) If someone wants to see me throw up PT, I can do it, though PT11 is making me jump thru some hoops.
Along the same vein, I get asked about "Auto tune". Let me tell you folks. If this new bundled offering of Melodyne will be your first experience outside of Autotune, prepare to be overjoyed. Melodyne is light years better.  No contest.
as always... ymmv

Steve...it's all good.  We're on the same side and I'd be wasting eveyone's time in a PT/Sonar debate.  Since I really just record pretty much for myself nowadays anyway, I really shouldn't comment on stuff like this, but having been involved in recording since the early 70's, I've gained too many opinions I suppose.

The "PT syndrome" was actually perfectly described by you in your post.  It is the most requested, but not always the best choice...Clients like that are just name shopping.

Keep on rockin' brother and tear up Houston.
Chris
