Forest's Edge

I haven't done anything fresh lately, so I'm going to post this old one. It's about 15 years old, done on a 4 track recorder. Bass and drums are done on my cheesy casio keyboard.

Mark, I liked the Irish folksong feel of it. Pretty good especially considering the equipment you used. One thing conspicuously absent: guitar.

BUZZ, BUZZ, HUM, HUM, REVERB, REVERB Listening in headset and on my 5:1 speaker system- lots of noise in there Mark. Nice song, but where is some of that killer guitar work hiding at in this one. I think if you clean this one up and hit it with some wave warm it would be awesome. Seem like it should be a little darker sounding for this type/style of song- kind of that mistic forrest creppy goolish kind of feel. I'd come in with a long sustain somewhere in the middle with a little DARK killer guitar riff. IMO not that it means anything, but that came into mind listening to it. No matter what loose the Buzz/Hum especially at the end. Good stuff though.

Mark, this was excellent! I loved this. I truly did, man! Close my eyes, I see that forest, not just the edge, I'm in that forest. Tolkien-like creatures running around, searching. Finding. Dancing. Very sci-fi, very dreamy, very mysterious! This is a song I would start working on a remake tomorrow, if it were mine .
Wow. Now tell me, what are all those instruments? I hear a mandolin here and there, but what's the rest?
Awesome, thanks for digging that one up for us!
    Heinz.

    Thanks for the comments.

Heinz, only instruments are casio keyboard for bass and drum, and guitar with heavy echo and reverb. The guitar does the rythm track then occasional lead licks. I hit some of the highlights with the whammy bar which gives it the other worldly sound.

Great stuff man! It reminds me of Big Country, one of the rockinest bands (and the most underrated) ever. Amazing what you did with a 4-track & casio. Now get off your arse and show us what you can do with some modern gear bro

    Mark,
I heard the Rush/Alex guitar vibe too on this one. Very cool tune. I could hear you doing a remake of this one using your current setup.....and of course adding a nice brief, but screaming sustaining lead in there. I just saw where Heinz mentioned a remake in his message. Remake, REmake, REMake, REMAke, REMAKe, REMAKE, REMAKE!!!! C'mon everyone join in!

The hardest part of the remake would probably be resisting the temptation to change it drastically

Thanks for the comments. I never thought about the Big Country connection. They were great. If you want to hear what I do with modern gear check my signature.

The hardest part of the remake would be duplicating the guitar effects. That was an old processor that had some great sounds, but finally went to digital heaven.

I probably will try to redo this one. I think some deep sustaining synth bass, ethnic percussion and layered guitars would be great on this one.

Mark, after reading the comments, I had to listen again. Upon my initial listen, I really thought the guitars were a synth, hence my earlier comment. Now, with it turned up more, I can hear what I missed the first time. I'd like to hear, not a remake of it, but a contemporary sequel.

Yeah that effect from that old processor was just dripping with verb and echo. It could really mask a guitar. I am definately going to do a new version of this song. I already have a few ideas churning. Now if I could just find the time...

Yes, I got that too. Stuart Adamson was a big influence on me, even when he was
    in The Skids.

This is a good one Mark, loads of power there, great chord changes. Go for a re-make, it would be really interesting.

Good tune to be redone with new instruments. Can make that sound REAL massive, would be good. Top that off with a killer solo, and whoops, usable for anything needing drama.

Big, lush, sounds on this. I would revisit this and lay down some of your tasty leads. Do it in the office. I won't tell your boss!

Yeah, you should really do something with it, I just played around with it to see if I could get a bit of a fat 'regular' bass with DimPro and the keyboard+using the sustain pedal - even missed a note , is hard to use that pedal well-timed, and I'm no keyboard genius, but your piece was nice to jam along with.

Not bad, but I've already worked up a strategy going another direction with this.

Didn't mean it for that, was just to show it's a catchy tune, the recording is hopeless, was just hunting for a bass sound

I hear you. My problem is I know what I want to do and just don't have the time to hit it right now while the iron is hot. I did buy a mandolin tonight and plan on putting some of that in it. I've never played mandolin before and was having some fun tonight figuring it out.

Cool. I read this thing about a studio guitarist who played just about everything with strings that could be tuned to normal guitar tuning, and the list was astonishing - never realized that. Was checking prices on some different instruments too, like ukelele, banjo and indeed mandolin. I can hear your idea already, I think

    Mark,
Just getting around to hear this one, wow, very nice. Has that great anthemic feel and quality about it. Really like the use of echoes and chorus on this. Very spacious but not spacey, has a clear intent and direction. Great stuf. Keep us posted on the remake.
