Forgive me for asking a dumbquestion but re: motorized faders...

Having never used a control surface I don't understand what morotized faders do for you in the real world other than look cool. Is it just that you don't have to watch the peak meters or screen when you mix? That you can just use your ears and the fader and take the track up a bit or back it off a bit in real time just using the fader and it will remember. Is that the deal or am I missing something?
I'm thinking about getting an Alphatrack, it looks like it will make life easier but I need to know more about it.

Thanks,
Julien

if your control surface has motorized faders then when you make a change in a software fader it will be reflect in the motorized one by moving to the same position as the software one.

the Alphatrack is an excellent unit but I'm not sure how well it works now with SONAR X1.

Previously there was a special driver written for SONAR but with the GUI changes I don't know how well it works without having to use the dreaded ACT to map the various functions.

    Here's why they are important:

If you stop a mix and want to make a change, you can tell where the fader is at the time.

For example (to use simple numbers), if the fader internally is on 8 but the phyical slider is on 3, when you move the fader up a number, instead of increasing like you think, you are actually decreasing from 8 to 4.

It is very difficult to adjust a mix if the faders don't represent reality.

The down side is that some faders, like the V-Studio's, are a bit noisy.

It's also nice when you're using less faders than you have tracks. When you switch track banks, the faders automatically move to the new track values.

thanks guys and/or gals.. this makes sense now. Does anyone know if the Alphatrack works well with X1. I don't have a firewire port on this laptop so the Frontier surface isn't an option and 599 for a VS-100 would be pushing things a little but right now.
I have a ZOOM R-16 but I have not been able to figure out how to get it to work as a controller, besides I don't think it has motorized faders...
Any suggestions? I hear a lot of blah comments about Behringer hardware but I have never owned any of it.

    Thanks,
    Julien

Alphatrack is invaluable to me in x1.  It isn't perfect since the upgrade no pro channel control.  but the channel faders still switch fine and makes navigating through the track much easier.
