Fortunes Change

This is actually intended to be a voice over track I'm doing for a friend that films amateur league female wrestling. There will be sparse sports like dialogue and video footage of female wrestling. Not volume maximized here. I will be doing the side chain volume reduction once he's finished with the dialogue.
I'm not one to really do guitar instrumentals. Only my second one ever. The bass played on my Casio DG-20 plastic guitar. Drums are my first project with EZ drummer 2. Mix sound OK?

Main guitar licks are great, but I wonder how something intricate like that would work sat behind a voice over... We would need to hear them in context I think, and they may need taking down a bit.

The drums do not appear to have any spread across the stereo image at all. But this might not matter at all for what this track is for. So, again... Would be nice to hear in context

    cheers

Will indeed be a unique challenge for me, not sure why he chose that one. He wants me to add some sound FX he has in the beginning. A few words in the beginning and end from him, but there is a few lines in the videos from the girls talking their wrestling stuff he wants prominent. He also wants to keep some of the live ring sound. I've only seen the unedited videos on his iPhone, video looks great but not sure how I'm going to handle the audio from the video.

An interesting challenge, for sure, if you haven't done this sort of thing before (I certainly haven't).

I look forward to seeing the video

I updated the mix with some eq work and wider for the drums as you suggested, thanks for the ear.

Hey Grant, I don't know how well it will fit the venue, but it sure sounded cool to me.

Hi Grant, long time no hear! Like this very much, great groove and some sweet playing. You were starting to burn then it faded!

Big thanks brothers James, Wookiee and Daryl.  Andy said something that made me think. Not any permanent mixing decisions can be made without the videos audio track. Only thing I'm planning for the audio from the video is to mix it like low fi AM radio and try to keep it centered so I at least have the sides. Just a theory at this point.

In any case the resulting track will not be whole without the video so I'm planning on finishing and mixing a version without the video. Thanks for listening

    Kickass guitar leads!

Overall mix sounds a bit overcompressed and crunchy though.  Are you uploading as a WAV or MP3 to soundcloud?  If you upload as WAV it usually gives better results.  Or maybe that's the way you intended the mix to be, because it's intended as a backing track underneath a voiceover?

Thanks Walt, as far as uploading as a wave file, I have always uploaded as mp3, I will upload as wave in the future, thanks for that tip.
So far not much mixing going on, I'm considering adding another change, some synths and I might be able to coax Robbie to play live bass. This one has been downgraded to demo status until a few decisions are made. Great to see you back and to have your ear brother.

Good piece. Guitar and drum parts are really cool. It is muddy sounding in that much of it is overly compressed maybe. Make sure there is no spiking or distortion unintended on each track.
    This piece should work well.

Nice guitar work, Grant.  Without the voice over, the mix does sound a bit over compressed, but in context may work very well.  I'd like to hear it when you think it's done.
