Free BFD

Possibly for UK only (I dunno). Computer Music magazine this month is carrying a DVD with a demo version on BFD. No time-out, no nasty noises, no gaps, just slightly reduced functionality and 16-bit only (no 24 bit). It has to be one of the best give-aways I've come across yet.

Got it, here in the UK. August edition. Considering its free I think it's excellent. Love moving the mic placements about to get more of the room.

Borders has it around here (L.A.) but we won't see the August issue for a while... the latest I've seen is June. Their DVD's are a terrific deal considering the whole shebang is only about $14 or so.

It's the August issue of CM, and I should point out that it's also significantly data-reduced versus the real thing.. the full BFD has way more included kit pieces, more velocity layers on each articulation, and allows you to bus the different mic channels to different channels in your host (so you can eq + compress the drums independently of one another).

    Hi Angus,

... which makes me wonder: Have you considered releasing a "Light" version of BFD, i.e. one that is somewhere between the version that comes with CM and the real deal?

This is not to say that a professional tool like BFD is not worth the €315 that it would cost me here in Germany. But as a mere hobby musician who has only recently spent money on the upgrade to the latest Sonar as well as a new audio interface, I am finding it hard to justify (to myself and in particular to my wife) buying a drum plugin that costs more than either. I would be particularly interested in a version with some of the core features of BFD and that costs about as much as DFH2 - of course this would have to be reduced enough to warrant the higher price of the full BFD (e.g. fewer drumkits, reduced routing options), but as long as it would allow me to get convincing sounding drums relatively easily I would be happy.

I can imagine that I would not be the only one to be interested in a product like this.

    Regards

    Jan

Sorry for getting carried away but I reckon you've done yourself a real favour. My only problem is when to upgrade to the full kit. (Gotta convince the wife.)

And now there's GURU -- awesome -- and only 129 UK quid. Have to check out the functionality as I'm a big Jamstix fan as err.. a lot of folk around here may have spotted.

Ok picked up the August issue of Computer Music Mag, and I can't seem to get the demo Verison to record into Sonar midi track.. I know we are only allowed one stereo pair out of BFD. The drums sound great and so does the Mic placements, but how the heck do you record this?

Never Mind I figured it out.

First start in Sonar, insert a DXi synth - (BFD stereo). When the synth insert options appear, select Midi source track, All synth outputs, show rack view, and synth property page and click OK.

Now BDF will load and Sonar will add an audio and a midi track to your project. Click the word Current Goves on BFD toward the top and when the window opens, place a groove and a fill in the open window there (The drum samples are the words on the sides). Now click on one of the grooves listed on the grooves side to hear it. Pess stop and then in sonar, Draw across the time ruler bar the length of the drum track you desire. 0 - 20 is good for testing. Now in Sonar, go to Edit - Bounce to tracks ... accept whats offered for the time being and watch BFD load the drum kit into Sonar.

The manual isn't that bad, it just doesn't explain how ot get your drums into Sonar properly.

    Peace,

SInce I've got hardly any money left I also wonder if this free version can be of interest to me. I'd love to get BFD but just don't have the money for it. Can this version do everything the real version can? Is it worth to download the official manual? Is this version only limited in quantity (less drums, less channels, etc.) or also limited in possibilities? I don't know BFD yet and I'd like to get a drum add-on which can help meget rid of a lot of tedious works, like manually creating fills and so on: I understood BFD can dot that...

I would say it's useful for getting an impression what BFD is capable of, but it's too limited for any serious work in terms of what sounds are available: First of all, there is only one kit, which in itself would not be a problem, but the only ride cymbal that is included is played with a brush and therefore of limited usability, and there is no sidestick either.

Angus has explained in another thread why it is difficult for his company to release a lower priced version of BFD that is somewhere in between the free demo and the full version, which is really a shame. Personally I think, bundling something like this with the next Sonar Producer edition would be a great idea if releasing it on its own is too costly for a small company such as FXpansion.

I purchase Computer Music almost every month, and when I saw the free BFD, I snatched one up.
I just can't figure out how to adjust Tempo.
    Anyone?
Maybe there's a workaround in Sonar, just thought of that, but it would be nice to be able to change the tempo for audition purposes.
This version is great for a freebee, and it just may sell me on the product enough to invest in the full version. I'm always fussing with the drum tracks in my music, and this could be my answer.
Anyway, can someone advise me on how to adjust the tempo?

Angus, you've done me a GREAT SERVICE when you replaced my BFD disks after a fire destroyed a lot of my gear. Anyone on this Forum wondering about FXPansion, very good Programs & Super People & Support! THANX ANGUS!
To anyone pondering subscribing to Computer Music Magazine,,,, It's a much better deal to buy the Subscription for 1-3 years with substantial savings... I originally bought it for a year back in 2003 & it's a SUPER READ! It's got tons of FREEBIES & EXCELLENT REVIEWS!!! I highly recommend it & as I said, it's way cheaper when you go for the 3 year deal! IMHO! WILDMAN

    Angus,

Since you are here, how do you get the free Demo version of BFD to record in Project5?

I open up P5 and insert BFD stereo as an instrument.
Next I set the kit and pull the fill and the groove that I want.
Next I set the tempo in Project5 and I hear it when I press play from P5 transport bar.

How do I record the drums into the track??? Sonar allows me to bounce it to an audio file, well P5 has bounce, but for BFD it's not working the same as it did for Sonar. Can you please list the steps that was taken when it was tested at the FXpansion labs.. Alco you may have to fire a few folks if they continue to skimp on providing folks with the step by step approach in the instuction manual.

The manual just says " Insert an audio track and add BFD as an instrument" Well where are the rest of the instructions...?

    Thanks,

I actually don't know the answer, haven't had time to get in-depth with P5. It should be as simple as doing a Bounce, but I don't know how P5's bounce function works.

In the full BFD, there's an addendum to the manual that has step by step "Getting Started" guides for about ten hosts.. not sure if P5 is one of them, will look in to that.

    Best regards,
    Angus.
