Free Samples for download

This is a link which can be used to download and prepare your own samples for several available instruments. Need to download the individuals raw samples, then they need to be cut and MIDI mapped for both pitch and velocity. The source is very good well recorded and without any equalization which gives full flexibility. Enjoy.

It's in the first word of my post "This". The different color is not very obvious I admit.

No. Not unless you have a way to convert them to soundfonts (.SF2) files. As it is, they are in AIFF format which is a MAC format.

you could convert these to .wav with many freeware translators. you couldn't use these with the packaged hs synths, but vienna is a free soundfont creator. then, you can post them on the web; maybe back at the iowa site (they seem open to the idea; i've never seen a more generous offer of freely available music). it would be an act of great service to humanity to make soundfonts, because it would take a long time though.

Vienna only works if you have a SoundBlaster soundcard installed. It checks for the presence of the hardware before it runs.

I did the conversion with Sampletank 2. It's very straightforward and doesn't require much time to do the mapping.

Ah, I didn't realize that. I probably didn't give such a convenient piece of advice then, since not many people besides me seem to have SB cards anymore. I have used Vienna a little bit, but probably will be more likely to use this with a Native Instruments Reaktor sample map (not a great fan of most soundfont players). Maybe I could post this to the NI website or with the Iowa guys. In any event, thanks for posting this Boten.

gourdjopy, you don't really have to use SB cards to have these samples available. You can import them on any format you want (Vsampler (has many available), ST, Kontakt, Giga, etc) and use them. If you intend doing sampling work and don't want to be limited to available soundfonts banks only, then getting some of these tools is a long term win.

Did you have to modify the names much to import them with proper mapping into SamplTank 2? I just started with ST2 and must say, it sounds rather straightforward, but seems like it'd be timeconsuming, cuz their are so many samples. UNLESS the mapping for notes and velocity is contained within the aiff file. I will send them an email to see if it is.

If not, did it accept the names as they are listed on the site -- does ST2 map it properly with the names as they exist on the site?

How many of the files did you import?

It is pretty straightforward if you rename the samples to enable ST auto mapping by recognizing the note and velocity associated with the sample in the name of the sample. Something like Mysax c4 v64.wav will be automatically mapped for c4 being the note source and for velocities equal or less than 64. Rename is not a problem as you can't just import the way the raw samples are since you need to edit, cut them and normalize them (so you ned to create a new file anyways).

The number of samples is a matter of preferences and a trade of flexible patch which allows you different articulation modes + better sound per pitch and the amount of memory the patch will take and time to download samples and edit them. I usually use no more than 3 velocity layers which is enough for most instruments. I built the piano patch by taking all white notes because it' critical to keep the sound natural but the final size was 230 Meg.
