Free X3 upgrade, but NOT for Cakewalk customers?

Hmm,  there is a free upgrade to X3 from X2, but NOT if you bought direct from CW.
http://www.cakewalk.com/page.aspx/Purchase-SONAR-X2-at-retail-and-get-free-SONAR-X3-Upgrade

Why is there discrimination? Everyone buys the same product, so why are Cakewalk store customers not allowed to benefit from the free offer?
Why should not buying a box mean you can't upgrade the same as those with a box?  Ironically, the 'retail' customer needs to setup a Cakewalk store account to get the product upgrade. Surely Cakewalk store consumers should not be isolated in this way.

I can only assume that the majority of CW customers buy via the CW store, hence why they are penned in and discriminated against.

I have been trying hard to get musician friends to use SONAR, and back in the X1 days I did talk one into getting X1LE for $20 to become a "CW customer" then upgrading to X1 Producer with the "free Production Suite upgrade." She got a sweet deal on that.

Once a CW customer is registered they have the CW account... so I do find this very unfair... especially since the people who got X2 from the CW store are also the "repeat customers!"

Well it is. If you had an x2 upgrade you can upgrade at a reduced.cost.

In the month leading upto x3, x1 owners could upgrade to x2 for $49. Then $149 to x3.

If you bought x3 for $399 retail in the last month or even now you get x3 free.

I think you meant to say that if you bought X2 in the last month at full price you can upgrade to X3 for free. Seems fair to me. I'd be mad if I paid full price for X2 right before they announced X3 coming out, and then had to pay $149 for X3.

I bought the upgrade to 8.5 so I could get X1 for nothing back in the day. I would think everyone has a special offer at upgrade time - except Logic.

It also seems like an obvious way for Cakewalk to help stores clear out their old stock of boxed copy software.

It seems like an effective way for Cakewalk to help the stores they partner with while helping some customers as well.

IMO, I think it's a very good policy...

Last year I bought a boxed X1 at (close to) retail and upgraded to X2 for free. Seemed fair to me.

Same here. Having said that, the release of X2 was far less secretive and they were advertising the "free upgrade to X2" offer at least a month beforehand. It was great because I'd been thinking about buying into Sonar but I knew that a new version was on the way. The offer meant that I could get my foot in the door straight away and start learning Sonar without having to wait for X2.

Don't think I paid full retail for X1 though. I'm pretty sure B&H Photo Video were selling it for $100 off.

So what? It's a like-for-like swap. Retail for retail, so there should be an upgrade for upgrade as well.

You should get your facts straight before you start accusing us of unfair practices.

In August and September, we were running 50% off upgrade specials at our Store. A SONAR X1 Producer customer could upgrade to SONAR X2 Producer for $49. Now, when SONAR X3 came out, the upgrade price from SONAR X2 Producer to SONAR X3 Producer was $149. The total paid would have been $198.

Now if you had chosen to wait, then you could have upgraded from SONAR X1 Producer to SONAR X3 Producer for $199. The price difference is $1, in favor of those that took the 50% offer. There is no need to have a free upgrade. This was not unfair at all. It would have been unfair to customers who adopted early to have the pay $149 for their upgrade and have customers who upgraded later in the cycle get the same product for $49. So sorry, but no free upgrade.

At retail, starting September 1st, SONAR X2 was at full price. People who purchased it at full price starting on this date will get a free update because this is fair. That also includes people who may have not known about X3 after we launched and found a copy of X2 on the shelves.

Prior to September 1, we ran an instant rebate on SONAR X2 retail which again offsets the cost for the upgrade to X3 much like it did with upgrade sales at Cakewalk.com.

So therefore, I totally disagree with you and think what you are saying is factually incorrect.

We are very fair to our existing customers (and always will be).

I was not making accusations of unfair practices. I was asking questions, not making statements. The line you quoted is not an accusation but a phrase suggesting what I believe to be the right thing, hence the word, 'should'. You will see later that I was being factual.

I was not discussing upgrading from a product years old (X1) to the new one (X3), but X2, a product purchased very recently, prior to an unknown and non-disclosed release date of X3 of the same type, meaning that the consumer pays for the upgrade twice, rather than to upgrade once at less cost.

I thought the X2 Essential SALE price was in a genuine sale, not what I now think was just an event to claw people in to buy a product that was knowingly (to Cakewalk only, despite numerous requests for information and refusals to supply it) going to be superseded a few weeks later.

My purchase of X2 Essential in the sale was £35.00
Had I KNOWN that Sonar X3 was coming out (People on this forum asked, but Cakewalk refused to be transparent), I would have waited a few weeks and only paid £39.00 for it. The total cost of my upgrade now will be £74.00. Now, how is paying almost twice as much fair, for the sake of a few weeks?

Now, my purchase was made 11th Aug, so was not in the qualifying period anyway. However, the situation may be different for those who purchased X2 in September.

All the best,

Lee.

Hi Andrew, Can you clarify? If someone buys or has purchased an upgrade to X2 at a retail outlet can they qualify for the free X3 upgrade or does this only apply to a free standing, complete version of X3?  Thanks.  best regards, mike

Hi Mike,
The free upgrade was for people who paid full price for X2 starting September 1st, not for the upgrade to X2.

I am guessing you are being hypothetical here, Mike, because you cannot buy an upgrade at a retail store.  (An upgrade being, for instance, X2 Pro. to X3 Pro. at the reduced price of $149.)  If you want to buy an upgrade, you have to purchase that directly from the Cakewalk Store.  That is, only full versions of SONAR (or Cakewalk products for that matter) are available at retail stores, not upgrades.

Kind regards,

I should have defined "close to". I can usually get 15 to 20% off the retail price depending on how many toys, I mean tools I'm buying.

Offering a free upgrade from X-2 to X-3 to a very recent purchaser of X-2 is way beyond fair. It amazes me we get anything for free. X-3b was a free patch. All the people that made X-3b were being paid to work on it therefore Cakewalk loses money on X-3b because its free. If they put out a few more patches for X-3 theyre hoping to sell enough copies of X-3 to pay the employees that worked on the new patches and the other cakewalk products. For a company to survive they have to make money, simple as that! I own my own business so I look at things differently. When X-3 sales slow down Cakewalk is still having to pay all the same employees every week. So, do they keep making free patches to give to people or do they make X-4 and charge an upgrade price to bring in more money to pay the employees and payroll taxes and all the rest of the bills?
One thing I've learned about buying software is there's always a new version in the works. Do your research before buying a full ver of anything in software because an upgrade is probably coming fairly soon. Too much free stuff equals going out of business and I for one would like to see Cakewalk stick around.

Not sure how true that is internationally at least. I know I discussed X2 upgrade with my (very local and very physical) local store and that wasn't any problem, it was distributed by Roland Scandinavia. Some guys in UK seems to have more local places to buy as well. So if things haven't changed with X3 (and it might have been given the Gibson deal for example) there should be plenty of places purchasing upgrades. Here's another Swedish one for X2 that I frequently buy from (not Cakewalk stuff though).

More on topic - I really don't see Cakewalk being unfair here.

Re: Free X3 upgrade, but NOT for Cakewalk customers! 2013/10/13 23:47:04 (permalink)
Some people were itchin' (with a B) because the upgrade to X3 Pro was $149.

If you're not making money with it....it is a hobby.  If you can't afford your hobby you need another hobby.

If you do make money with it, you should be happy to pay for the upgrade.  I do make money with music...have made my living with music for the past 36 years.  I had no problem paying for the upgrade...as others have said, a company that doesn't make money will not survive....and this includes Cakewalk.

As for my hobby....I like to fish.  But I don't have a $55K Ranger Comanche bass boat.

As much as I'd like to make a living at it, it IS still a hobby for me. But it's more than that, it's a PASSION, and I gladly laid down my $199 to upgrade to X3 from X1e. And I'm so glad I did! X3 has been amazing and inspiring so far!

Lee, don't feel bad.  This seems to happen every upgrade when Cake makes offers you can't refuse to new customers who would feel cheated that they bought X2 and a month later X3 comes out.  W/o the discount that would be a pretty ragged deal.

there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
