Free at last, free at last ...
In a surprise turn of events, my x did not argue, did not flinch, she signed the emancipation document, and my $700 dollar a month obligation of the last 12 years is finally over. My daughter finished her schooling, got her state license, and is planning on starting her own business, so I'm told. I feel happy, numb, sad, confused, old. It was a good day today all in all ... I don't have those very often, probably why I feel so weird, like someone died. It's the strangest damn thing. Anyhoo ... I'm really tired ... probably should go before I say too much. And to all a good night.

Good night, Bub. Give it a few days to sink in. It sounds like some pretty big changes--positive changes--but still something you'll need to process. Good luck.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys? X2(X3 pending hardware upgrade), Emulator X2, E-mu 1212M, Virtual String Machine

I think Bub's the one getting his independence here! By my math, that's $700 more a month that can now go towards gear... Of course, I'm not married so YMMV (a LOT) as they say!

Great news Bub. A thought. Try and put the $700/month away (as if the payments never stopped). In a year you have a fully paid vacation.

Or indeed some back up for the young lady being as that what is was going toward for the last 12 years. That way you finally get some say in where your financial input into your child eventually goes, and hopefully if you still have a relationship can be a good part in supporting her aims with her. Heck they want the best part of $700 a month just for the insurance on my daughters first car, dern theives. Anyway it's great to hear that you've honoured your commitment to her over the years and have gone from being compelled to a place of choice. That can be a really liberating thing for you and your daughter both. The best part of my relationships with my daughters didn't start until they really had the freedom to choose. I totally understand the mix of emotions though and maybe a vacation ain't a bad idea after all! Anyway sounds like a sign-post in the long road and my best wishes go out to both of you!

Thanks everyone. With me not working, there's no plans at all to spend it, and even if I was, we'd just pay our debt down. All we have left are her student loans and mortgage. Everything else is paid. I've never thought of money as a luxury, only as security. I think once you develop that mind set, it takes care of itself. As for vacations ... I've traveled all over the country, and spent maybe, $300 ~ $400 tops a trip. My wife traveled so much for work that she accumulated massive amounts of frequent flier miles, hotel points, rental car points. We took a 2 week trip to Yellowstone one year, stayed in West Yellowstone IIRC, and if we spent $300 I'm exaggerating. We haven't taken a vacation in about 5 years so we're planning on going back to Yellowstone next year just when school goes back in. With no kids/families running around or New Yorkers riding your tail like they are trying to get home at rush hour, it's like you have the entire place to yourself and it's incredible. We planned all of our vacations for the off seasons and found them to be a much more enjoyable experience.

But a 19 y/o gal that lives on the outskirts of London and loves clubbing and shopping in town I think she'll take Paulo's route. Thing about her though is she'll put the hours required in to pay for it if need be. She'll go direct through solid concrete that one if there's something she wants on the other side. I did offer to put her down as a named driver and insure the car in my name but I've got zero no claims having not been driving for the last few years, but it was all moot because she wanted it in her name anyway.
