Freezing and unfreezing track resets synth?

Hi, newbie user here! I recently froze a Rapture simple instrument synth track to save some CPU cycles. Now that I unfroze it, the track is silent, because the instance of rapture on this track now has no program loaded. It will be hard for me to find which program I used, but at least it was a preset... Is this behavior expected? Is there any way to retrieve the program, except by trial and error?

Did you recently update Rapture or go from 32bit to 64bit?

Thanks for stopping by. So I take it this is not expected behavior.
I got Rapture quite recently (from the CM 200 anniversary issue download) and haven't updated it afer getting it. I am working on Sonar X3 32 bit currently (steam distribution). I migrated this project from Music Creator 6 touch to Sonar a week or two ago, but I believe the current rapture program and notes were recorded after that. I definitely froze and unthawed it in X3. I don't think X3 was updated while doing this project, but I can't be sure since on steam updates are applied automatically, and I may have overlooked it updating.

Anyway, I could solve the immediate problem as I was able to find a backup, where I could look up the name of the Rapture program in question. Still, I am now worried about using the freeze function, so clarification would still be much appreaciated.

Edit: added signature for system info

Sonar X3 (studio, Steam distribution) / Music Creator 6 touch (Steam distribution). Rapture & Dimension Pro. Win 7 x64. 8 GB RAM.  CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K. System HD: 128 GB Samsung 830 SSD. Program / Project HD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12. Audio interface: Tascam US 122 MKII. Onboard sound: Realtek ALC887.

I've never lost settings on plugins when freezing/unfreezing, but I also have never frozen a synth. I generally bounce to tracks instead and make notes there. I have read where it is advisable to save your synth settings as a preset (if you have modified them from another preset) before freezing so you can reload them if you need them again later. So I bounce to a track with the name of the  synth and preset somewhere in the track name or notes.

I would suggest sending a support request email to Cakewalk. That doesn't sound like intended behavior. Make sure to include the version of X3 and Rapture just in case that is where the problem is.

Your back up is located in the folder you backed it up to. just look there and you will find it.

And no, this is not expected behavior. I've been freezing and unfreezing in sonar for over 10 years and i never lost a setting or preset. I always get the same exact settings i had right before i froze it. This leads me to believe that you changed something before or after you froze the synth.

Yes, I meant to say that I have indeed found the backup with the unfrozen track and was able to retrieve the preset, and just set that again on my unfrozen track - so my immediate problem is solved.
Well, it's just very strange. I guess I will just have to run some tests to see if this happens again. If not, I guess it was just a freak problem. Thanks for your input!

No, that is not expected behavior. I just tried to duplicate it here and could not. Even if I didn't save the project before freezing, SONAR was still smart enough to remember the patch settings and restore them after un-freezing.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yep, I've seen this, but only in a very specific situation. I had a series of projects that I had started in Sonar 7 - while working on the arrangements, I froze some soft-synths to free up resources temporarily as I was futzing with other bits. When I upgraded to 8.3 and re-opened those projects, anything that had been frozen while working in v7 lost its settings when unfrozen in 8. By the time I realized what was going on, I had already written over the earlier backups. Your experience of creating the sound in one program and then porting to X3 sounds like the same problem.

So now, even though I have *never* had this problem in any other context, I always always ALWAYS export the synth's preset before freezing. I'm also paranoid enough that, before UNfreezing something, I copy the frozen .wav to a new track in case the preset doesn't come back. Hasn't happened, but a little paranoia can be good for you sometimes.
