Freezing essentially converts the MIDI to audio output. Really I haven't gotten too much in the way of gains in performance. But then again I don't run any more than 4 or five midi tracks at the most. Usually just two.
Archiving has made a bigger difference for me when I am working on a large number of tracks with a lot of plugins in the project. By archiving the track those plugins no longer are used. I get a performance gain there. As for Freezing and Archiving. Yes you can use freeze and archive together in a track.
