Friedlander Violin
Hey! I am in a desperate need of a new violin and have been looking at Embertone's 'Friedlander Violin'. I love the sample songs on their page. have any of you fine folks tried it, or one of the other solo instruments from Embertone? If so, how is it? http://www.embertone.com/.../friedlanderviolin.php

Embertone products are top notch. Don't have Friedlander, but have only heard good things about it. I do have several of their wind instruments and they get regular use in my palette even though I have more expensive alternatives as well.

Cool! Yeah, their instruments are fairly priced it seems, but of high quality. I have some of their freebies and love them. But do you know if their scripting and keyswitches are as good as their sampling?

I have the EWQL Solo Violin and yes, it sound pretty decent, but it's not a very good solo violin IMO or easy to play

I've heard that Friedlander is one of the best solo violins around, so I don't think you can go too wrong with it. But to make sure you're satisfied here's a comparison of a few violins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WwzesN1kEM

Cool video! They all sound quite good. The Kontakt engine is definitely a preference. I still leaning towards the Friedlander. It certainly sounds most human of them all...

I recently got the Intimate Strings bundle (Friedlander, Fischer, Blakus and Leonid) and these are indeed wonderfully natural instruments with great legato and even the ability to double up until eight players. The Friedlander has been updated to version 1.5 and clearly is a work of love. Leonid bass is the latest, also NKS-compatible, and sounds absolutely delicious, as does that Blakus cello. But do try the Fischer viola as well, if you're looking for a violin, you might be amazed by the sheer musicality. Edith adds: EastWest Hollywood Solo Violin (not the older Solo Violin) is also great but has a much larger footprint.

Heeeeey! There's a good discount on them all when you buy the bundle! I didn't realize they were the same instruments. The NKS part is definitely interesting. I do have the Native Instruments controller. Is it safe to assume that the rest of them will be updated to NKS versions sometime down the line? I looked at the EW Hollywood one, and the samples are amazing - however, I am getting a bit tired of the Play engine. Plus, I hate to drag my dongle along when I'm out with my laptop. Embertone has the edge of being authorized through NI's system. That bundle is interesting. I think I'll go for that. Thanks guys!

Wow! Good one! I just realize I haven't kept up to date on things for a loooooooong time! Since I am already buying a lot of new stuff, I might as well throw this one in. It doesn't seem as versatile as the Friedlander, however, at 39bucks I can't see why not ;) Great! Thanks!

Here are two more for you: http://www.chrishein.net/web/CH-Violin_Overview.html https://cinesamples.com/product/cinestrings-solo I own the Embertone libraries and Chris Hein. The CH library is very playable. You'll really want to setup TouchOSC with the Embertone libraries to get the proper control over expression and vibrato, otherwise it is difficult to get the right sound out of it during certain types of phrases. For really slow or very fast passages, the Embertone libraries can sound wonderful. It's in between that it shows some weakness. The Cinestrings Solo library is unique in that is gives you 1st and 2nd chair solo instruments for violin and viola, as well as cello and bass instruments. Regards, Dan
Mixing is all about control. Hey Dan! Thanks for that. I looked into both of these before becoming interested in the Embertone. I really liked the Cinestrings demos - but prefer the sound of the Friedlander... and initially I was just looking for a violin The Chris Hein one is good too, but also not quite what I am after. Somehow, the CH stuff has never really appealed to me. It is really intersting what your are saying her, however. I need to think a little again Thank you

Embertone wrote they were updating Friedlander, Fisher and Blakus to the (latest) Leonid level. By the way, did I say I really love that bass? As for EastWest and iLok, you don't need a dongle anymore, you can activate a machine license.

He he, everyone is raving about that Bass, it must be good ;) The NKS bit is a definite advantage. Yeah, I know EastWest started doing machine licencing, but that's only for 1 machine, right? And then the dongle is redundant? I still need to use it on two machines, maybe three. I hate Dongles...

Yeah, that kills it for me. I keep my EWQL stuff on my main studio machine and use something like Session Strings Pro to do on the road mock ups. This time I want something I can have in my carry on as well as in my studio without a dongle to be irritated about

You can't get rid of it if you don't want it anymore, which makes it even more expensive. Same with EastWest. Embertone allows transfers though.

Bohemian violin is the one that the folks at VI-control rave about, and they can be a picky bunch regarding sampled violins. I own Friedlander and it's a good one. It seems Friedlander requires a little bit more tweaking whereas Bohemian is easier to play right out of the box.

I have a 4 Embertone solo strings and the two Virharmonic. Embertone is my go-to for pretty much everything. They are solid instruments and sound amazing in a mix. Plus, the total control you have over all the different aspects of the instrument make it very versatile. I got Bohemian because of the raving people did on VI-C. It's not a bad instrument but it's incomplete and won't be finished for quite a few years it seems. Not only that, but it doesn't sit well with other instruments because of how expressional it is. That's not a bad thing, but it limits it's use because it really doesn't play nice with others. That is where Embertone really shines at and why I use it so much. Just be aware that Embertone takes a bit of tweaking to sound right. You'll have to do quite a bit of editing once you have the notes down but the results you'll get are impressive. I didn't bother with the East West solo strings. Fool me once, shame on you... Plus, that thing sounds flat as hell.

I have EW Solo Violin, and there are some "odd artifacts" in some of the samples... It sounds "OK", but just ok.... I just got the 8DIO Solo Violin Designer. It's interesting. It uses "Phrases" to build a Solo Violin Part...so it's a different way of approaching a solo... One of the best Solo Violins I've heard is the one in EW Gypsy. That one is very nice. THAT one should have been the "Solo Violin" they released as "Solo Violin" IMO. I've heard nothing but positive things about Friedlander, and it was just on offer for $65 on KVR, and am broke...and it sold fast (go figure) Still have yet to find the "one to rule them all" my precious!

And bloody hell how could I forget this one if you just look for a violin: http://www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/instruments/strings/pp016-artisan-violin/ Spitfire Audio does also have the older Solo Strings bundle and while they have a really wonderful sound they are wet as hell. There's nothing wrong with the sound of the Air Lyndhurst Studio, but when you can't really tone down a room it becomes a bother.

Wow! The Audicct one is on sale too! I might as well pick it up :p I wi'll soon have purchased an entire orchestra today in its individual parts!! Cheers guys, I appreciate and enjoyed all the input here. I got the bundle from Embertone and have tested the Violin. However, a sudden 5- hour overtime took my evening away. But first impression was as expected. Lovely sound, very versatile and yes, it will require tweaking. But I think I can get a whole lot of great sounds and detailed performances from this, which seem to be impossible with many of the other violins I have tried. So far so happy! I really like the sounds of the bohemian but I try to avoid getting more plugins to play back my libraries. I'm down to Kontakt and Play and I will try to stick with that. When I grow tired of the two to three violins I bought today, however, the Bohemian is very high on my list ;) I don't think there is "one to rule them all" but I am happy with the refreshing of my sound palette today. I can't wait to work them into our new album!
