Hi-Thanks for the post. I didnt even know there was update coming out. I am not an FL studio user but its always good to know what others are up to. I have always liked the Piano Roll in FL studio and the drums but the rest of the program didnt really attract me. Lets see if there is anything there to attract me now. Watching video now.

I'm not a FL user,  but I will give credit where credit is due.  This program has matured in a lot of ways.

Not bad on first look but then again it was a Promo video by Imageline!

I do think they have the best Piano Roll of any DAW. Not saying it has the best features but just seems the most easy and intuitive to use.

However I realise that FL studio in regards audio does not hold a candle to Sonar but then again its not meant to.

I bought the Producer Edition with lifetime free upgrades a long time ago, and I'm very glad I did. I love using FLS for sketching out quick ideas and trying different song arrangements quickly, and it's just fun to use. I don't do anything close to hip-hop or electronica or dance or trance etc., nor do I use loops or the step sequencer, so I'm far from a "typical" user, whatever that means at this point (a lot of FL users don't use the SS any longer, based on what I've seen on the forum, and that pretty much was the app in the beginning).

I've always liked FL's Piano Roll, and the ability to dump whatever noodles I come up with to it after the fact (not having to record first) is nice. There are also some pretty neat new features like Newtone (Melodyne-ish, but monophonic only) and Pitcher (correct/drive pitches via live or recorded MIDI). Those aren't free, but come as demos.

I don't use it for audio recording except drafts, and I hate the mixer, but it's great for what I do use it for. I-L has always been good about bug fixing, too, IME, and the "open" beta (I think it's for Producer ed. users only) is a good thing.

FL Studio supports industry standard plugin formats so you can use instrument and effects form 3rd party manufacturers including VST1 to 3 (64 or 32 bit).

I actually started with Fruity Loops 3, tried Cubase, and then found a home with Sonar 2 (I think)

Sonar just handled audio and midi way better.

I'm suprised people are saying the piano roll is that great, I remember it sucking.  Then again it's been a while.

Is there some functionality you can do there that you can't in Sonar?  I've always thought Sonar was a more full fledged sequncer.   For example when working with multilpe midi tracks.

    Hi kb420-

Other than NewTone and Pitcher, no, but I do have the VST Juice Pack with Edison and the VST version of Sytrus. There are tons of FL-only plugins in PE, but I use very few of them.

I think it's fair to say that it's changed significantly since v3. One thing that FL's had for a long time that has been a topic of discussion here is the ability to route midi to multiple instruments without resorting to 3rd party virtual midi cables. The new version also has a plugin called patcher that allows you to patch together multiple instruments and fx, and play them as a single instrument. There are probably other things, but I'm not yet familiar enough with X1 to say what they might be.

Yes, I joined the discussion about lack of laying in Sonar right now.

Seems like Midi sends would be an easy fix.

Even better would be if the midi send worked the same way the audio one did, where when you reduced the level of the send it reduced the strength of the amount sent (not sure how difficult that would be)

I was just watching a few videos! That Newtone isn't too bad at all particularly advance mode ((displays all the tools required right there in the editor, on the notes)) I like that the editor has a nicely designed 'full-screen, and being able to quickly add to playlist, and although it's mono it's quite easy for working on harmonies (as shown in This tutorial video), and being able to convert audio to midi is yet another nice feature. Sure V-Vocal along with AudioSnap had these capabilities long before but (I'll end on that note LOL)!

Newtone and Pitcher comes free with FL Studio?, the site says that NewTone comes 'installed' but did not say it's free.

Does appear that FL has come a long way since I last looked at it. And I agree, that midi editor is nice... excellent workflow features and from what I've read around; that Step Seq is one of the best around.

I think for $199 FL Producer certainly has a lot of tempting features, nice workflow features and as you say.... ideal for quickly drafting ideas.

On a well spec PC.... how well can FL handle several plugins simultaneously for example; Ni-Komplete + BDF + Omnisphere? ...

Lastly, agree with others; for mixing and mastering FL would not be my first choice.

No, they're not free, but FL10 includes demo versions of both. They're currently "pay what you think they're worth" for the NewTone + Pitcher bundle. When I bought them a couple of months ago they were still in beta and I think the minimum you could pay was $12.00. They're currently FL-only, but that might change.

I know one thing at the time of this writing, they already just released a 10.5 beta version and I was blown away by what it has to offer. Perhaps I'm going to be switching from ableton live to FL studio but I know one thing this answers the project5 version 2. I think this is by far a better alternative for now when they released the 11.0 version.
