Full Orchestra Now Added - Earthman

Following on from my post with the string sections only, I have now mixed in the rest of the orchestral parts. This includes the woodwind and brass plus piano, harp and percussion. The levels on some of these may sound a bit strong at the moment, but they will adjust in the context of the guitar parts that will be added next.

I hope you will find the development of this piece interesting.

Congratulations, Stuart.  This is what I've been waiting to hear, and you delivered the goods and then some.  IMHO, this puts you into the upper echelon of composers around here.  I will be listening to this again and again, and awaiting your next composition.

    All the best,

I'm loving the development. I don't like the parts with complete silence but I'm guessing these will have some other instruments in the next version.

You're right - some of the bits do sound a bit strong but seeing as you know what you'll be doing with them that's obviously not an issue.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

I really like this. It's easier to hear where you are going with this now. Really cool, everything sounds pretty good. I suppose the final polish is still to come? I agree with the others here who commented that some bits and pieces are coming out a little strong. But no biggie. This works already. I'm curious how you're going to stich it all together in the end. but well done, nice parts and great programing of the strings. And the harp is excellent!

I haven't heard the prior renditions of this piece but I admire your compositional skills on this in addition to the excellent mix. I hope to hear more of your work here Stuart.

Hey Stuart, the mix is excellent but I'm still not getting this peice.  It reminds me of film music which I think is what this was for, yea??

Very nice Stuart.  Impressive undertaking.  The composition sounds great.  If your looking for any suggestions, your Brass sounded a bit odd (timing and abruptness) around 36 seconds.  The strings sounded great as did your use of all the orchestral textures.

A quite enjoyable piece!  Great job with it

Have faith. The next step is to add all of the lead instruments and a little vocal. This should give the peice it's structure and will fill in the gaps.

I am on my hols in the canaries at the moment but am looking forward to getting on with the next stage when I get back.

And again looking forward to any tips you can help me with

    Great job!

I forget who said it, but the bits of silence "snapped me back into reality." Were the silent parts intentional? Seeing as how this isn't a "busy" mix, the silence wasn't needed unless you were imagining some kind of scene, but that depends on the mood you were going for.

I do think that instead of abrupt silence, maybe crescendos and decrescendos would work well in those spots (being careful of course) - especially since I heard the piece in movements. It would be beneficial imo to have them connected somehow.

Note, I don't mean every time a movement ends and a new one begins; however, place where it doesn't seem constant (volume); however, you don't want listeners to fall of the face of the earth.

Which brings me to the ending. I would have applied a fade. It's up to you, but here's why I would have done it:

I'll use the analogy of a car. Notice how it skids when you slam on brakes trying to stop? Albeit, as seen on tv and film in dramatic fashion, it's stops just in time. However, I would say, that it is slowing down (much faster because of the pressure applied when slamming the brakes).

The last note (by length and volume) simulated this, but there's the possibility that you slammed into something still. A fade would imply audibly that you slowed down and it's up to the listener to decide if you barreled right into the object, just grazed it or stopped within inches of it.

That's alot to say for one note, I know, but that is what came to mind upon hearing it. I didn't say what you did was not okay as it depends on what you wanted to convey, but I do think it was Beagle when critiquing one of my earlier pieces, said this: "I'm not a fan of abrupt stop and starts!" And truth be told using the car analogy, they aren't either. (Don't drive a manual in the city! haha!)

I apologize for having rambled, but I did enjoy the piece and I do wonder what the inspiration behind it was.

This is an earlier mix of the piece i have just posted. The gaps are for the other intruments that have now been added. Have a listen to that too.

Yeah. I forgot. I did see those, but which file is the piece with everything? If anything, do keep what I said in mind for future pieces. Again, keep up the good work!!
